Am still backdating!! After Airlie Beach we had a 16 hour bus journey down to Rainbow Beach. The time actually went quite quickly but I didnt sleep much. On one of our food stops the bus driver took us to the most disgusting place...There were loads of beetles on the doorstep and loads of flies. Also apparently there were loads of spiders in the phone box too - YUK!!
We arrived at Rainbow Beach in the morning after an hour stop over in Hervey Bay. The staff were extremely rude (Apparently hungover but no excuse when you work on a desk in a hostel!) It was called Pippies Beachouse and honestly I would never stay there again...Not that it was dirty but it had nothing in the way of entertainment.
We spent the day lazing by the pool in the hostel next door!! We also wandered around to the beach and the few shops they had! It is a quiet place but I liked it there. That afternoon we had a meeting about our Fraser Island Safari and we also met our group - Luca from Melbourne, Josie from Sweeden (Who was also on our boat on the whitsundays!), Lisa & Robyn from Scotland and also Nina from Germany....So a good mix of people! We were given lots of information and given money to go and buy food for 3 days so off we went food shpping!
The next morning was an early one, we had to be eating breakfast at 7am and had to check out at 7.30am. Graham - The manager of the beachouse loaded our car for us and then we were off. We had to go to the garage and get our itenary but after that we were on our own! Luca was driving first and I was scared after the first minute - He took corners so fast it felt like we were going to topple over! We drove down to the beach and then got a ferry over to Frasker Island. Then our journey really began!
Our first stop was at Eli Creek which is a lake. However, the current goes down the lake so you could walk to the top, get in the lake and let it take you down to the bottom...The lake was no deeper than waist level! We had lunch on the beach there and then set off to see the Shipwreck. This is the remains of a boat that has been there for years. The boat has rusted completely and is right on the edge of the water....Really strange to see it just plonked there!
It was my turn to get behind the wheel next...Luckily the sand was hard so it was easy to drive on. I took the group to Indian Head which is a lookout point for marine life. It was tough trying to park in soft sand - Especially as there was an audience of people who had already arrived there! But I think I did it in style...Even if the others thought the car would roll backwards!! (It didn't by the way!)
We wakled up to the top of the cliff and saw loads of turtles, manta rays and stingrays. We even saw a baby shark which was so exciting!! After this we headed back down the coast to our camp (which we had set up earlier.) When we arrived we cooked dinner and had a beer. This may sound nice, IT WASN'T!! We were surrounded by these huge moth like flies, they were everywhere! Luckily they disappeared when the sun went down but then all the other flies came out!!
I did see another shooting star however, but I soon went to bed as I couldn't handle the flies! We were up at 7am and the huge flies were back so we had to pack up camp fast and set off. The first stop of the day was Lake Wabby, we had breakfast before tackling the 30 minute wakl through a rainforest type thing. During this wakl we saw a massive spider who had made a web across the walkway - You literally had to duck under it and hope the spider didnt fall onto your head! The lake was amazing and I soon forgot about the longest wakl of my life! We jumped in and stayed in for a good couple of hours. We got our body board and went down the sand sunes into the lake which was so fun!
We then headed back down south to a place called Lake Birrabeen. This was an inland drive and it was very bumpy, but a lot of fun! The water at this lake was so clear and the sand so white. In the water you could swim out a bit and dive down to the bottom and pick up mud and wipe it over you - It made your skin so soft!
Before we lost the sun we headed to our campsite to set up for the night. This time we had a proper campsite but this didnt stop the bugs from appearing! This time we had these annoying cockroach flying things who flew into you - One flew into my leg and I was so unimpressed! We had dinner, talked and had some beer. I was almost in tears soon after though as there were so many bugs EVERYWHERE! I went to bed to get away from them.
The next morning was an early one again and we headed to Lake MacKenzie. The weather had turned sour and the rain was starting. We swam in the lake but it wasn't as nice as it could have been due to the weather. We left there early and headed back to Rainbow Beach. I was driving again and this time it was so much fun as I got loads of different surfaces to drive on.
