Hi Guys.....
Got to Hong Kong at about 16:40 local time, met a welsh couple in the cue at customs and turned out they were staying in the same block of hostels that i was so got a taxi and split it three ways. Cost just under a tenner each for about a fifty minute journey.... the first 45 mins just felt like you were in spain... then you hit the main road in Kowloon called nathan road, you see what china/hong kong are like in movies and on the tele. So i was kind of prepared for what its like but it is still so overwealming how busy, noisy, polluted and stuffy this place actually is, its hard to explain til you actually come here. No wonder all the locals walk roound with dentist type face masks on!!
The taxi driver dropped us off right outside the Chiung King mansions (the adress of my hostel) for starters this place definately was no mansion in my opinion!! Walked in to the bottom level where i got bombaded with africans, indians and chinese all asking me if i wanted a cutom made suit, fake rolex or a room for the night. I had my watch on, had my room booked for three nights and pretty sure i wasnt going to need anysuits to get in the places i wanted to go so unfortunately turned them all down!
Chiung king mansions is made up of a market/ shooping mall on the bottom floor with every different nationality (apart from any westerners) trying to sell you anything from a sim card to underwhere to a curry!! Got taken to my room by this little african guy who carried my backpack for me and made my bed... got really lucky with the room, brilliant air con warm shower and a bed to sleep on even a little telly with bbc news on it, what more could you want!?
My first mission was to find the ferry port to macau which was going to be my next stop, i have got a flight that leaves there for bangkok on the 24th of july. Managed to find that fine and at a very cheap rate to get to macau... however finding somewhere to stay on macau is seeming to be even more of a mission unless your willing to pay millions!
Been with this welsh couple for a couple of days so have been getting round by taxi and splitting it 3 ways, transport over here is so so cheap and so much better organised... the london underground should be ashamed of the hong kong MTR's!!
Been nealrly 5 days since been here now to be honest it really has flown by and although i have taken it fairly easy to catch up with jet lag etc. Ive done quite a bit. Been up to the peak by tram which is 120 years old this year it really is high up there and the skyscprapers look minute to the huge mountian your standing on!! Been over to Hong Kong island a few times to various different markets. Been up the Ngong Ping which is a huge ski lift type thing through the mountains over harbours all the way up to the top to see the biggest outside free standing Bhudda in the world, the trip up there was more exciting than the actuall bhudda itself to be honest!!
Tried loadsa different foods and been to the most memorable restaurants ever last night... memorable for all the wrong reasons but it was so so bad that it made it quite funny in the end! Had 5 big bottles of beer each, plate of snails plate of whole pigeon, shrimps, a whole lobster, razor muscles, prawns, beef noodles and all this came to less then a tenner between three of us was crazy! Have had to teach myself how to use chop sticks as there is no chance at hell that your going to get given a sppon or fork in these places!
My last night in hong kong tonight then im getting the ferry to macau and hope for the best that i can find a room when im over there cos i really cant find anything on the net... thats what this trip is all about though so quite looking forward to the possibility of sleeping on the street for the night. Have had a really interesting time whilst being in HK an really do reccomend that people should come here but only for a couple of days you can see all thats worth seeing in that time and the place is far too hectic to stay for much longer as i am finding now!
Really looking forward to bangkok and the big ko san road will update from there next. Just written a load of jibber jabber in that blog but my money is running out and really want to go up for a shower!!!
Hope all is ok at home... X
