The Kaunas basketball team won! We heard only minimal celebration at the hotel. They must have snuck those fellows out of town in the dark of night to avoid them being lynched.
As forecast, the day has been gloomy. We left at 9:30 on our local tour bus for Trakai, a medieval castle that served as the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania back when there was such a thing, which was many wars ago. Raining a bit when we got there, but not a problem except for the Polish tourists who we poked with our umbrellas. And there were a lot of them! The castle itself is not terribly notable, but the surrounding area of lakes and islands is very pleasant. The rain stopped before we left, leading to a pleasant stroll away from the throngs.
Got back to our hotel shortly after 1:00. Priscilla and I set out for a Lithuanian lunch in the neighborhood. At the glacial speed of Lithuanian service, this took a couple of hours. The beers came quickly, though. We next set out thru town to revisit the Amber Museum and pick up a gift for the folks back home. On to the main Cathedral, which shows that the Catholics have nothing on those wild and crazy Russian Orthodox church designers. I climbed to the top of Gedimas Tower to snap some photos of the city, while Priscilla headed back to the hotel for a nap.
We have a group dinner at a local restaurant this evening. Departure for Riga is 0800 tomorrow. I'll blog from Latvia in the evening if all goes per plan.
