We joined about half the group for an evening walking tour. The basketball team from Kaunas is staying at our hotel and are playing the Vilnius team as I write this. They were leaving for the game as we were gathering. That is apparently quite a rivalry. First stop was an organic bakery to sample the local rye bread. Black as a moonless night in Westcliffe, and sweet from fermentation. Then on to the Amber Museum. This is a local treasure with a fascinating history. We sampled amber infused liquor, a traditional folk cure. I am certain that if I had kidney or liver pus, it would be gone now!
Nestled in the heart of Vilnius is the Uzupis Republic, an artist's community. Akin to having the Pearl Street Mall secede from Boulder. They have their own Constitution, and have no provision for gun ownership. We visited a pottery studio in the republic. It is common here for people to take classes and make gifts by hand.
We dined by ourselves after the tour, eating outside at Vynine Saint Germaine, a place that had caught Priscilla's eye earlier in the day. Wonderful food, very different from our meat-and-potatoes expectation from the guidebook.
I should have noted earlier that Odyssey has provided audio headsets for us. We needn't all crowd around Dalija when she is speaking. This is a great convenience.
Finally getting dark at 9:30 and Priscilla is off to bed. My work for the day is done, so I can relax and check emails from Ball.
9:30 bus tour to Trakei tomorrow. Read all about it!
