We got a message early in the morning from Rusty to say that he would open up his TV and Movie car museum for us over lunchtime. It's up in Jackson, about 2 1/2 hours drive away, so we gobbled down our breakfast and hit the road. It was very hot, so a good day to be in the car with the air con on anyway!
The museum was fantastic! We saw the General Lee from Dukes of Hazard, KIT from Knight Rider, Herbie, The Bluesmobile from the Blues brothers, The Batmobile, Scooby Do's scream machine, Cars from Fast and Furious, The Beverly Hillbilly wagon, Munster car, The Ghostbusters vehicle... and so many more. Many of the cars were originals straight off the movie set, and those that weren't, were very impressive replicas. Glen and I were a little jealous because Daniel was allowed to sit in the General Lee! It was definitely worth the drive.
On the way back we decided to break up the journey in Tupelo, with a detour to the Birthplace of Elvis. It seemed only fitting after seeing where he was buried, to see where he was born. The birthplace was so much better! No OTT tourist glamour show here, this was simple, and real. You really got the chance to see how Elvis came to be who he was, by following the first 13 years of his life. I found it amusing that almost all of his friends were surprised that he became a star - to them he was just a boy who loved music, no great talent.... he never even won a local talent show.
The park around his house (paid for by Elvis) was very peaceful to stroll around, and we spent a couple of hours there soaking it all in, in the intense heat.
And on the way home... another storm came through! The rain was so bad that many cars pulled off the road - you just couldn't see. When it rains here, it RAINS... like you are driving under a waterfall. It is kind of cool - just not when you are on the roads!
