...So anyway, we were very aware of the copious amounts of helicopters but didn't really think a lot of it until we walked over the river. It was there that we witnessed what I can only describe as a high speed boat chase involving the police, assorted baddies and 3 helicopter. We were having a whale of a time watching the whole drama unfold and feeling like we were in some sort of film but when the 'baddies' pulled out a gun we decided it was time to vamos! We were told later that they were eventually caught. All very exciting. We continued a walk around the city and went on a boat trip around the harbour before heading back to the hostel for a late afternoon nap. We then went for some food and went to see the city at night from the harbour.
The following day we got up and got the bus to Kuala Lumpur. Gone are the days of the grotty Greyhound in Australia- Malaysian buses fully recline (!) and have about 4 metres of leg room either side. We arrived in Chinatown in search of a hostel but unfortunately our chosen one was full so we ended up in a guest house which was pretty gross but manageable for one night. Amy managed to break the bed within seconds of sitting on it which caused much hilarity. We went out for some dinner (potentially boiled rat) and then went to explore the infamous Chinatown markets..big mistake! This marked the start of a wonderful relationship between us and said market. After a few purchases we went back to the guest house and vowed to return the following night to get some more bargains.
After a huuuuge lie in (we think we were still feeling the effects of 'airportgate') we got up and checked into our hostel of choice- Matahari Lodge who has possibly the friendliest owner I've ever met. We then went for a walk around the city which culminated in a two hour wild goose chase in attempt to find the butterfly park- it goes without saying that by the time we actually found it, it was closed. We then went out for some food and returned to the markets for some bargain shopping- if you see me walking around at home with a Louis Vuitton or Mulberry bag then it is ahem, 100% real!!
We woke ridiculously early the next day in order to go and get free tickets to go up the famous Petronas Twin Towers. Arriving at 7.30am definitely paid off as we got up there in the first batch. When we were coming down to have our token tourist pictures we had the surprise of our lives when we bumped into LAUREN!! After a much needed catch up and good gossip we went for another potter around the city and then went up the KL Skytower to see the sun set. Lovely. The following day we made the trip to the gorgeous Batu Caves which are 13km out of the city and basically a huge Hindu temple ensconed in a 100ft cave, very impressive. The 250 step climb to the top was perhaps less impressive though!
Today we catch the overnight bus to Hat Yai in the South of Thailand and from there we will get a bus in the morning to either Phuket or Krabi to start the Thai adventure...
