There seems to have been some sort of mix up with the last blog so this part is supposed to go before the previous one written from Kuala Lumpur. Very annoying so here we go again...
We had a great final week in Australia which we spent in Cairns, mainly relaxing around the lagoon and catching up with people that we'd met up the East Coast. One day we went on a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef- we got a free introductory scuba dive included with our trip but it turns out that we were pleased that that was all it was as the technique was pretty difficult and to tell you the truth, we were actually TERRIFIED! We spent the rest of the day snorkelling around the reef and taking millions of pictures on the underwater camera that we had hired for the day. Once we were back on the safety of the boat we all thought we saw a shark but it turns out as per usual we were over-reacting and it was just a (very) big fish.
From Cairns we flew to Darwin and then on to Bali. As soon as we arrived we realised how different it was going to be to Australia. We were picked up by a driver from our hotel and negotiated the crazy streets of Kuta. After a few near-death experiences we arrived at The Green Garden Hotel, aka air-conditioned paradise for only 11 pounds per night. Our first day in Bali we took full advantage of the free breakfast (seriously, you would think that we hadn't eaten in weeks) and then went off to explore Kuta. After walking for a while we quickly got distracted by the many stalls and pretty much each bought a new wardrobe for about 5 pounds! The following day we went on a full tour of the island including Tanar Lot, a monkey forest, many temples and Ubud. We were baffled as to why people were taking pictures of us everywhere we went but our guide informed us that it was because these people were from Jakarta and never saw Westerners- celebs for the day!
After 4 nights at the lovely hotel we decided it was time to save some money and moved to another hotel for only 3 pounds per night. We spent the rest of the week relaxing around the pool, getting facials and massages (a bit indulgent on our budget but at 2 pounds a go it would be rude not to) and experiencing the Bali nightlife, which seemed to revolve around drinking on a step in the centre of Kuta. Very odd but when in Rome...
From Bali we flew to Singapore and decided that as our flight got in at 2am it would be a good idea to sleep in the airport. It wasn't actually too bad but when we awoke to find a gaggle of Indian tourists taking our photo we decided it was time to leave. We caught the LRT to the Chinatown district of the city where we had been recommended a hostel by a friend we met in New Zealand. After checking in there and bumping into the girls from our Fraser Island trip (!!) we hit the ground running on the sightseeing as we only had one full day in the city...
