After a frantic dash out of bed, Ma and Pa dropped me at Bham airport for the flight. Had the usual heebie jeebies about whether my suitcase would be too heavy (it wasn't), whether they'd let me through with all my batteries (they did), and a mishap when I thought I'd left my driving licence at home (I hadn't... I'd in typical Louise manner - just popped in a safe place!
After getting Kerry a memory card, me some water and food, we boarded. I had a lovely couple next to me and loved playing tour guide and giving them tips on what to do and see whilst here. My IPad also decided not to play ball - so the new Mr Grey book I quickly downloaded this morning couldn't be enjoyed mid-flight! And the plane had no inflight entertainment - Pah!
We landed an hour early though, and scuttled off to get a shuttle bus, after much interrogation by the scary customs dudes. We pulled into Port Authority shortly after entering Manhattan. NY didn't have the same wow factor as it had first time around but the place is still amazing. After walking to our hostel, we checked in. Bunk beds! Yippee! The most expensive hostel in all the world too.
We dropped off our stuff and headed out on the subway, to Brooklyn. I love dumbo and wanted to go back there. A Big Apple Greeter I had here some years ago - Beth - took me there last time and I loved it. Calmness but so close to the chaos, and on the water. Win win! After a mooch around we headed to Brooklyn Bridge to make the walk back to the city. Got chatting to an old Californian guy who asked us lots of questions and seemed like a nice chap.
Brooklyn Bridge is amazing to walk across, Liberty tooling so tiny compared to the mass array of concrete jungle. Kerry nearly died on the bridge... walk on the left it said... bikes on the right it said... Kerry to the right she thought. Who knows how she avoided being knocked over lol.
Once we got over the bridge I wanted to go see City Hall, but it was covered in scaffolding - boo!! So we jumped on the metro up to Grand Central. Lovely building, seems wasted on a train station though! We then scooted up the road towards Bryant Park. Another nice little spot, although this time it had circa 500 bums in the air. A mass outdoor yoga session on the lawn. It'd have been rude not to watch so we sat down and gawped.
Then it was off to Times Square. Where we featured on a bill board (see photos). All I could think of was good, and then yummy buffalo wings at Bubba Gump that I'd had last year in San Francisco. Turns out they don't do them here so I chose calamari and Caesar salad ($15 for a side chicken Caesar salad - which was pretty much leaves - what is the world coming to). Lol.
By now it was 8.30pm. We were supposed to go to Empire State tonight but we're deadbeat (1.30am UK time), so we're grabbing an early night before a 5am get up for our bus to Washington.
