WRITTEN IN RETROSPECT
Sunday 24th
We took the night train from Beijing to Shanghai last night. This is know as a soft sleeper due to the fact that it has four beds per compartment instead of six! Luckily Lucy and I were grouped with an elderly man and a young woman and her very cute little child. This sort of train is fairly new to China and goes at high speed, so a journey that should have taken 26hours, took us 10!
We prefer Shanghai to Beijing. It's more accessible and there appears more to do in the city here. There are parks and museums and some lovely quirky little shops. We feel like we are starting to find a rhythm in China and it is becoming less shocking. Although Lucy did see a load of toads in a box outside a street fish restaurant and decided to do some filming….subtle, she ain't! Ribbet!
Our hostel in Shanghai is really good. Free internet access, attached to a cheap china restaurant, bathroom and lockers in dorm rooms and only a five minute walk from the centre of Shanghai. The dorm rooms are mixed but the majority of people are pleasant….well, we have taken to calling one of our dorm-mates 'Dracul' as emerges from behind curtains and speaks in a very suspicious accent which he claimed was Canadian….Transelveinian more like!
So, in short here is a little run down of how we have found China so far…..
THINGS WE LIKE…
·The people have become more friendly and helpful as we have travelled more
·The food (we found a really cheap restaurant where the food was booootiful. We are also eating with chopsticks now)
·'ThinkBread' - it's a bakery that is really cheap and sells lots of yummy little treats that make up our lunch!
THINGS WE DON'T LIKE…
·Spitting - there is a lot of nasal clearing and spitting. Ooooh it's delightful to listen to!
·Smelly drain covers - on the corner of every street there is a distinct stagnant water smell. The streets aren't very long!
