The last 5 days have been absolute bliss and a much needed break to chill out and re-charge our batteries ready for the last leg of the trip. We left Nadi early on Wednesday morning (27th Feb) and were taken by bus to Port Denarau, ready to catch the 8.30am Awesome Adventures boat to the Yasawa Islands. After a 5 hour cruise - where we got slightly pink - enjoying beautiful island views, we arrived at Tavewa Island and the Coral View Resort. We were taken ashore and were given a big 'Bula' welcome by the staff. We enjoyed a fruit juice and fried rice lunch before checking into our 8 bed dorm Bure, right on the beach. We spent the afternoon sunbathing before a tradition 'Lovo' meal (like the New Zealand Hangi), with some of the food tasting like cigarette butts! We were sang a welcome song and introduced to the staff too. After a crab race we hit the sack.
We spent Thursday sunning ourselves on the beach after scones for breakie, breaking only for lunch (burger) and tea (bbq) before another early night. Friday was more active, we always rose with the sunrise, around 6.30-7.00am and devoured doughnuts for breakfast before heading on a cave snorkelling trip. It was about 45 minutes on the boat to the cave where we jumped into the freezing, fresh water. We had to swim underwater and rocks to reach the second cave in the pitch black, the guide gave us a bit of history before we swam back singing 'row, row, row your boat!' Once back at the beach the sea felt like warm bath water compared to the cave water! When we arrived back at Coral View we had pizza for lunch before hitting the beach and spending the afternoon snorkeling around the beautiful reef , spotting colourful fish and coral, bright blue starfish and even a sea snake! Early evening a group of us hiked through the bush to the summit to watch a stunning sunset over the nearby islands. Back at the resort we ate a 'Malenium' tea (apparently dishes from around the world!)
The following morning, after muffins for breakfast, we changed to a bigger dorm with an en-suite before chilling on the beach. It was sausages and potatoes for lunch and curry night in the evening, with gorgeous sweet and sour fish. Yesterday was our last full day and being a Sunday there were very few activities. After pancakes we took the boat to the nearby village and enjoyed a long but lively and musical Fijian church service, returning back to our island in time for a veg rice lunch. Again, we spent the afternoon on the beach, breaking for our daily ritual of coffee and cake and enjoying the 'International Barfay' for tea, followed by a couple of fruity cocktails.
This morning was time to pack up and leave paradise. After more scones we checked out and caught some final rays before a buffet lunch of cold meats and salad. We were sang a farewell song, then after saying bye to the staff, we headed back to the mainland. Once back in the hostel in Nadi we had a relaxing evening and attempted an early night.
