So it's our last night in Washington, and we are sat on the bottom bunk listening to a few more squirrels in the roof. All in all the hostel has been great, although the showers are tepid, if not cold which is not good for washing hair or showering if your a wimp like me.
We left you last time by saying we were off to the museums. Well... the museums in Washington are not all there cracked up to be, not a patch on London! We went to the Air and Space museum as we were hoping it was more like the science museum.....however Washington's idea of a good museum is to stick a plastic plane on the roof and add writing to it. We also went to the American History museum and Natural History which were a bit better, but they were free so we can't really complain!
In the afternoon, there was an event called 'Rolling Thunder' which is where 750,000 bikers come from all over the US to ride the streets of washington in memory of the war veterans and POW's who fought for their country. Tom loved it! He was abit like a child in a toy store. If i had a pound for every time he said 'i like that one!' 'no no that one!'. But it kept him entertained which was good for me, haha.
In the evening there was a Memorial Day Concert held at the Capitol Building. It was a huge event (and free) where veterans were remembered throughout all american wars. Alfie Bo and Katherine Jenkins sang, and stories of war heroes made me just a bit tearful. Tom and I are not sure solidiers get the recognition and respect they deserve in the UK.
Today we slept in, which was much needed after we decided to walk absolutely MILES to see the Lincoln Memorial lit up at night after the concert.....seriously, we massively underestimated how far it was! When we finally dragged ourselves out of bed we visited the American History Museum, mostly to kill time before a parade, and it was by far the best museum of the trip. The Memorial Day Parade was good, waving flags, clapping and cheering random people. Really felt like we were part of the holiday (look at us calling a bank holiday "the holiday.....only been away a week!?). Even got a cheeky snap of tom looking happy!
We also went to Hooters for $2 happy hour beers in the late afternoon, and Tom of course ordered his obligatory side of chicken wings.
Off to Philadelphia tomorrow. We have enjoyed Washington so much, helped by memorial day weekend, and would recommend a visit. Tomorrow we face the hurdle of clothes washing, which Tom has been doing in the shower so far and it pretty leased with - i'm not so keen as i like my clothes clean!? Our new hostel says it has laundry facilities so fingers crossed!
Update soon, leave any messages or comments as we love to hear from you all. xxxx
