Afternoon from Philadelphia! We are at the tail end of our time here, and are heading to the lovely shores of Boston tomorrow for 4 days. It's going to be a 7 hour bus trip (Tom's already dreading it!) but we will be staying in our own room for the first time on the trip! No snoring, sleep talking or lights going on at 3am, which should be lovely.
Philadelphia, we have come to the conclusion, is......a bit boring. After being spoilt in Washington with all the free memorials/museums/attractions, and the hype of Memorial weekend, we have hit Philadelphia with a thud. It's not that it's a bad city.......it's just... there's not much to do here! We went to the usual Liberty Bell/Independence Hall sites, but found them to be lacking anything exciting (sorry to all our American friends who are proud of their history, but we just didn't get it). The upside is that it has been super sunny and hot, 94 degrees, and our hostel is the best so far. It has a great kitchen with free tea and coffee all day (I was so excited I had 3 cups of tea on the first day) as well as great facilities and friendly staff.
On our first night we were taken on a 'ghost tour' of Philadelphia... which turned out to be our hostel guide taking the mickey out of the ghost stories, followed by beers at the hostel watching Ghostbusters (the tower that they filmed on is here behind our hostel, even though its set in NYC) which was fun and meant we got to walk around and get our bearings.
Last night was free pasta night (Tom was practically giddy, although he did put too much chilli on his pasta and couldn't stop hiccupping) and we met a nice girl called Judy who is the first person we have chatted to in a hostel (I promise she isn't in a cult Kaz!?).
Today (our last day) we went to the Rocky steps, which was a struggle as it was 20 blocks away and a billion degrees outside (it's strange that a fictional character has a statue, Spiderman doesn't have one in New York......just goes to show how little there is to do here). We got to see the famous 'Love' statue on the way, and then went to visit the first penitentiary in the US, the Eastern State Penitentiary. It was very interesting, although I have been to Alcatraz and that is much better but Tom liked it as it was narrated by Steve Bushemi (he even started asking the staff there what we should do after "Steve" finished!?).
Off to Boston tomorrow! We are going to treat ourselves to a nice seafood dinner whist there (because posh old me loves a packed lunch and pasta dinner made at the hostel, but a girl needs a treat now and then haha).
Keep reading, update soon xxxxxxxx

Hillary Page I know Philly well so know all the places you have visited. Did they tell you that the Bell was made in London not in USA. Have never visited Boston so am really jealous of you two. Enjoy it and keep us all posted, Dad and co should be back from Turkey tomorrow, hope all is well with them as there has been rioting in Turkey, (from my experience this probably hasnot made the US papers or TV)( Much love to you both Grandma H
