14th November 2006 - 16th November 2006
Arrived in KL mid afternoon from the Cameran Highlands and checked into our hotel, rest of group decided that they would go to the very Malaysian Nandos.... we gave it a miss and went to what looked like a nice little local place, trying to be more cultural! We should really not have bothered, it was a veggie restaurant that served everything from "Mock mutton" to " mock prawns".... nice!!
Found a nice bar called the Regge bar and had a few games of pool, we met the owner who was Chinese and kept trying to sell us (well me) slimming pills through his company, Herbal Life! He also lived in Ambelside at Lake Windermere for some of the year.... very random all in all but we got a free drink.
The day after was cool, we had cars driving us to the Kings Palace, Batu Cave temples, Menara Tower, Petronas towers and the War Memorial. We were knackered by the end of the day but managed to find some energy for the biggest shopping mall we have ever seen!
Sat on the street in China town and had a lovely meal and watched everything going on, went to the Reggae bar but it was not exciting enough tonight so decided that the backpackers roof bar party we'd seen advertised sounded like a much better plan. It was literally just a man, with cans of over priced Tiger beer on the roof of the dodgyiest hostel ever with the subdued backpackers in the world!
Left KL the morning after (could have spent longer there it was that good) arrived in Melacca at lunchtime and had a real Malaysian (Bananonya) meal. This was basically a swivel table (Like the ones you get in the chinese restaurants) and they kept bringing out loads of local dishes, it was all yummy and the dessert finished it off nicely (crushed ice, brown sugar, condensed milk and fruit pods, sounds random but was gorgeous!!)
Took a trishaw bike tour round the town (poor guy, he was old and he had to cycle for all three of us) visited various sites including the execution chamber ruins which was nice and cheery.
Next was a boat trip along the canal and into the Malacca striaghts where all the big cruise ships were. There were funny monitor lizards which looked like crocs on first glance and the tour guide was more like a counciller/comedian with advice on dating and loving ourselves and how Malaysia was not full of terrorist (nobody had said it was!)
Another good day, finished off with a lovely meal in an outside restaurant and back to our accomodation which was basically an old man's house, bags of character though.
