17th November 2006 - 20 November 2006
Today we travelled to Singapore and checked into hotel. We had the luxury of our own rooms with hairdryers and everything! Just chilled out in the afternoon seen as we have 4 days here.
This was the last night of our group tour, so we all went to a random little chinese restaurant which was owned by an Malaysian, Midget, Body Builder man who promoted himself on every other page of the menu!! Food was excellent and we all had to say what had been the best part of the trip and the leader gave us each a lovely neckalce... mmm.
8 of us headed to the Night Safari which was great. We went on a little train through the animals and there were no bars or anything to stop them from eating us. I have to confess that I wussed out of the Bat enclosure but Lu braved it and they swooped right over her head and everything! All in all an amazing experience with Lions, Tigers, Elephants, Giraffs ..... we could go on.
The following day we checked out of the nice hotel and made our own way to our new hotel. We pulled up, it looked nice, it was cool in the reception and it looked quite posh.... they had never heard of us and didn't have a booking!! bloody typical seen as we'd paid in full.
To cut a long story short, we kicked up a fuss and they found us a room at their sister hotel "The Hotel Sunflower". After three nights here I don't think me and Lu will ever be the same again.
The first day was fab, afternoon tea at Raffles with all the English people dressed up and us in our least screwed up items from our back packs. We went with the people who were left in Singapore from the trip and it was really good. We then headed to the Cinema to see the new James Bond Film (No sarky comments, we were trying to save some cash and there were a few of us who went!!) Headed back to the hotel, sorry brothel, and literally could not believe our eyes!!
The street was swarming with men and there were girls everywhere! It was funny but a little bit scary as well. It gets worse... when we were heading to bed we realised that there was a lot of noise coming from the corridor and "clip clopping" going on. From our peephole in the hotel door, we witnessed the most argy bargy ever know!! the rooms were rented by the hour and the maids came round a number of times in the night. We were literally the only guests left in the morning, no wonder they didn't do breakfast!!
Oh well, undetered we set out the next day and in true tourist styleee got the Hop on and off bus. We made full use and saw loads. Went to Merlion (they are big on these Fish/Lion statues) Park on the water front which was beautiful and then Sentosa Island which is basically a massive tourist resort with man made beaches and we went up the Carlsberg tower where you could see the full city. Next we went to the Botanic gardens which were massive and had a really long walk round there. Ended the tour at little India which was another experience. It was Sunday night so literally every Indian man in Singpaore was on the streets, they were ok though compared to where we were staying!
Had a curry at the Barefoot cafe which was great apart from you had to sit on the floor so pins and needles kicked in just after the veg pakoras but we survived.
Monday was a big shopping day, got some nice clothes and went to this place called Clarke Quay at night which is there up and coming area with loads of bars and restaurants. Had a lovely mexican meal and a few beers. Had a bit of a trauma to get home seen as no decent taxi driver in Singapore would take us to the Red light district but we got there in the end!
