I can't believe tonight is our last night in Melbourne! The last few weeks have gone so quick its unbelievable. We've had such an amazing time with Lucy, Bruce and Roo, as well as doing our own thing in the city. Highlights for us have been:
New Years Party. Lucy and Brucey threw a "Heroes and Villains" themed party which was fab. As we are skint we made up our own superheroes so we could mostly wear our own clothes - Hickey went as Captain Sunglasses and Lorry went as Captain Colourful. Lucy also made her own Supermum outfit, but it was Bruce that stole the show dressed as the most unconvincing Wonder Woman we have ever seen! The decks were set up outside, we had a bbq going and cocktails were being made up in the shed. It felt so odd being outside in the warm as the clock struck 12. We partied till about 4.30am and welcomed 2012 in style!
Lucy's Scavenger Hunt. Lucy made us a scavenger hunt of things to find around Melbourne, which took us to places we would never have found on our own. We especially enjoyed the museum (much to Hickey's surprise) as it is really interactive and has loads to do and also the Rooftop Bar. We really trekked around Melbourne and our feet were killing by the end of the day.
Melbourne Bars. There are loads of really funky bars dotted around the centre of Melbourne - if you know where to find them! Some of the best bars we went to were hidden away so you wouldn't even know they were there. The Rooftop Bar is basically a doorway on the main street that you wouldn't really notice. When we went in we had no idea what to expect. As you go through the doorway you follow the spiral staircase in this really old, distressed looking building, right up to the fifth floor. You then walk up 2 more outside staircases, which then opens up into a bar on the roof with fake grass and red umbrella's, with a view over the city. Another bar we found was just a chalk board in a small opening of a tiny alleyway that said "It is a whole other world upstairs". We went in the doorway, again walked up loads of stairs and found ourselves in a ornately decorated bar with velvet cushioned seats sunken into the floor, wooden swing seats and even an indoor shed!
Suzuki Night Market. Every Wednesday night there is a huge night market at Victoria Markets, with food stalls from every country imaginable as well as clothes, handmade stuff, artwork etc. The piece de resistance is that they sell alcohol and have a live band outside. We bought ourselves a couple of sangrias and found a spot in the crowd outside - it felt more like we were at a festival than a market!
Wine tasting crawl. This was immense! There are loads of vineyards around Melbourne which all offer free wine tasting, you just rock up and they pour you what ever you want to taste! Some of the vineyards we visited had about 20 wines to taste! Lucy drove us from vineyard to vineyard and as you can imagine we were pretty tipsy by the end! When we got back we cracked open the goon (which didn't taste that great compared to what we had been tasting in the day). Hickey moved onto the Jim Bean, Bruce had has homebrew and Lucy had a well deserved glass of wine. Hickey, Lorry and Bruce were all feeling quite fragile the next day!
River Cruise to Williamstown. We took a boat trip down the Yarra River to Williamstown and had some fish and chips by the bay, it was a lush day and by god the fish and chips were good!
Areas within Melbourne. If we come back to Melbourne (fingers crossed) we will a) make sure we have more money; and b) have a few nights out in the following places: St Kilda; Chapel Street; Brunswick Street. These places just seemed really cool with loads of bars within stumbling distance of each other. They were pretty cool in the day too, with all the graffiti and vintage shops in Chapel and Brunswick Street, and the St Kilda-ness of St Kilda.
Separation Creek. We spent the last few days at a place called Separation Creek on the Great Ocean Road, where Geoff (Lucy' mum's partner) has a holiday home up in the hills. It is so peaceful and has a wicked view of the sea. There is no TV or phone reception, so we spent the days on the beach hoping to get some tannage, and spent the evenings getting drunk and playing cards. Hickey went fishing for the first time and caught a fish within 5 minutes. He was most pleased! He was also pleased when we stopped at Hickeys Cutting (photo opportunity not to be missed!) Sep Creek was just awesome, was such a lush way to end our time with Lucy, Bruce and Roo.
We're off to Sydney tomorrow afternoon, and intend to spend as much time as possible on the beach. Looked at the weather forecast and were disappointed to see it was only 23 degree. Oh how we've changed!?!
