Our arrival to Sydney was delayed for a few hours as a light on our plane wasn't working and they had to call an engineer in, but the good news for us was we got a food token so had free food at the airport. Hickey did spill tomato ketchup all down his shorts though and after coming out of the toilet to clean himself looked like he had wet himself! He tried to dry himself in the toilet but couldn't get the right angle (if you have seen the Mr Bean film you can imagine what he was like in the toilet!). After the debacle of the airport we finally arrived in Sydney about 8pm, checked into our hostel and headed out for a quick look at Sydney centre.
The next day we went down to the harbour to see Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, there was a bloke playing his didgeridoo to some dance beats, it was awesome so we boogied there for about 30 minutes, we took a video and will upload it. There was also a street act a little further on who ended up getting Hickey involved in his act!! It was a hot so we ended up sun bathing in the park outside our hostel for the rest of the day. As we are mega skint we did a cheaper supermarket shop and had an early night.
Next day we decided we would head down to Manly beach so we caught the ferry across which took about 20 minutes. Again it was a nice day so we headed straight to the beach to get some tannage on the go. Its a surfers beach and by god we could see why the waves were the highest we have seen by a mile. The tides were so dangerous so there was only a tiny section open for people who wanted to get into the water. Hickey got in and got smashed about by the waves whilst Lorry looked after the stuff. After a whole day there we went back to the hostel and our room absolutely stank! We thought it was our German room mates but on further inspection it was the damp patch by the fridge in the room! We stayed in that room one more night before asking to change room, we then ended up in a room with a very old man in his 60's. Not a pretty sight seeing him in his boxers every morning. Hickey even saw his bare ass!
Next day we went on a 3 hour walking guided tour of Sydney centre which was really cool and we learnt a lot about the history of Sydney. It was free, which is why we did it! Our not spending money pretty much went out the window that afternoon though as we stopped off for a quick drink in a really cool beer garden at about 4 and ended up out all night. Our plan was to check out the Chinese New Year launch and then go for a nice meal. We checked out the markets which were really cool and then walked down to Darling Harbour, a really cool and trendy bit of Sydney with loads of nice bars and restaurants looking over a harbour. We had a few happy hour drinks and then went to go for something to eat. On the way we saw a big screen in a middle of the field playing something, as we got closer Lorry noticed it was the Wizard of Oz (Hickey thought it was a Chinese version to celebrate Chinese New Year!), so we sat down amongst the crowd and ended up watching the whole film as it had only just started. So our romantic meal turned into eating a McDonald's in a field watching Wizard of Oz! Lorry ended up getting her burger stolen by a bird though so was not happy, well until she got another one!. After the film we went to a place called 3 Wise Monkeys and had a few drinks, then a few more and then the Sambucas came out, although Hickey spilt the first 2 all over himself by tripping up the stairs. Not good when they cost $8.50 each (over 5 quid!). Anyhoo we got pretty drunk watched a live band and then some dance music came on so we had a boogie - it is so hard to do the Every Day I'm Shuffling dance with a full pint in your hand - and went home. On the way back we stopped at the park to play on the swings, cue Hickey to fall flat on his face! After that we thought we best get to bed!
Next day complete write off, both felt rough, it was raining so we pretty much mooched about the hostel and wrote some postcards to home. We organised to meet Hickey's cousin the next day as he lives in Sydney. He lives in Kings Cross the red-light district of Sydney but where most of the bars and clubs are. We have noticed that there are loads of Adults shops and strip joints in Australia but in Sydney there seems to be a whole street dedicated to them!! We checked out a few bars (not strip joints!) before we met Joe (Hickey's cousin). It was Sunday so he and his girlfriend Charlotte cooked us a roast dinner and it was lush. As was their flat, which you could see the bridge and opera house from. We stuffed the roast down our throats along with about 6-7 bottles of wine! Hickey was battered and we went for a drink after at about 11pm but that was it as Lorry had to get Hickey home!
Next day was another write off, we did venture into town although it was raining AGAIN (most it has rained for over 40 years!). Stopped of at a bar and had a coke! Caught up on some footie games and had an early one.
We only had 2 nights left and so the next day we checked out another district of Sydney called Surrey Hills. Its a very trendy part so we just waked around it for hours going into some very unique and weird shops, we had some lush fish and chips and had an early night. We didn't sleep though as now in our room joining the old man who snored a lot was a another bloke who looked like one of the George Agdgdgwngo from Fonejacker and he snored too! Not good!
Its our last night now, we have moved into a private room which is pretty nice and we only had to pay an extra $18 for it! Can't believe our time in Australia is over, although we have spent over double our budget so its probably a good time to go. Its been pouring down with rain all day so we haven't had the chance to do much, its rained so much we didn't even get to see Bondi Beach! We are meeting Joe and Charlotte again tonight for a few farewell drinks although we have to be up at 6am for our flight to Christchurch so it won't be a crazy one, Lorry doesn't want to be throwing up on a plane again!! Although its us so don't rule anything out!
Overall we have loved Australia hard to pick out our favourite thing or place but we have talked maybe about coming back. Goodbye Australia, Hello New Zealand where we have booked something called the Kiwi Experience. Its a hop on hop off bus that takes you around the whole of NZ. We have bought the Top Dog route, here it is
