Lorraine and Jay on The Big Trip
Hi all!
We're in Sydney four weeks today, hard to believe - in a way it feels like we've been here forever, but then it's gone so quickly....
Good news!! We've both found work! Jay started a three week contract in a big healthcare architects this week. They said they would like to have him for longer, but they were waiting on the outcome of the Queensland elections - basically if the Labour MP was kept in, then she had promised a major hospital project to them. The election was yesterday, and she was re-elected, so fingers crossed now that his contract is extended. He was absolutely wrecked last week, so hard to get back into the routine!!! Plus he's walking forty mins to and from work, so he's exercised out of it as well.
I've got a job in a PR agency four mins from our apartment (literally!). It's a six month contract, back to beauty PR, woo hoo! I'm covering for some of the team going on long holidays for the first while, then their Account Director goes on maternity leave in June and I take over from her. Bit of a big job... wasn't expecting to get an opportunity like that. I don't start until mid-April, but I'm meeting another PR agency tomorrow to talk about working with them on some short-term work in the meantime. I've basically been an accidental housewife since Jay started on Tuesday, so would love to get my brain working again before I start the 'proper' job.
We're just thrilled that we're both sorted now - the job market is pretty quiet here, so we were starting to stress a bit after the second week of full-time job hunting. We're really lucky to get the jobs we did, so someone somewhere is obviously looking after us.
We had Paddy's Day down under last weekend - there was a big festival on in Hyde Park, in the centre of town. SO many GAA shirts everywhere, actually felt like it was in Dublin somewhere! There was trad music, Irish dancing, and a Tayto tent (nearly died) - it was selling Erin soup, Hellmanns mayo, Jaffa cakes.. Our friend Roisin broke her foot the day before, so the poor thing was struggling on her crutches - she was transported around by queen's chair by all the boys! The Guinness was actually ok, weird celebrating Paddy's Day in thirty degree sunshine!
Jay started work at 9.30am on Tuesday, and I got the call offering me the job at 9.40am, so didn't tell him until that night, he couldn't believe I managed to keep it quiet from him all day! I was on the phone to Mam and Dad when I got the call, so had to rush Dad off the phone to take it. Phoned them straight back to tell them, so nice that they were still up and I could tell them first.
We did the Coogee to Bondi coastal walk yesterday (Saturday) - it took us three hours and it was boiling out - we were wrecked! The views were just amazing, we took in seven beaches on the way. Still sometimes need to pinch ourselves that we're actually living here! There's such a mix of people on the beaches, families, groups of teenagers, older people - everyone makes the most of the outdoors here. There's coin operated barbeques on a lot of the beaches, so everyone brings their eskies (cool boxes) out and make a day of it.
Roisin and Dave came over to ours for dinner afterwards, our first guests - very exciting! We ate out on the balcony, trains go past every fifteen mins, so we're like the Railway Children, ha ha! We headed out to an Irish bar at 1am, place was packed out for the rugby. We watched the English match first, and Jay made best friends with a guy called Dinny from Cork - then found out he was an O'Sullivan too! I faded bigtime after the first half of the Irish match (it started at 4.30am our time), so we left for home - then found out this morning that we won and it was an amazing second half - raging!
We've put a good few new pics and videos up - hope you enjoy them.
Hope the paintballers survive today.... Lisa send us pics of the white German Shepherd asap - sounds beautiful!
Bye!
