Lorraine and Jay on The Big Trip
Hi everyone,
Sorry we haven't been updating the site in the last couple of weeks - has been so busy here getting everything set up..
We're in our new place just over a week now, so happy with it - feels like a mansion after spending so much time in hostels! We'll take some pics and put them up - Jay's already got some great ones of the view from our front balcony, we can see the Harbour Bridge from it - wow!
We had a great weekend last weekend - we went to our friend Ben's parents' place in Bathurst - three hours drive from Sydney, through the Blue Mountains. It was like stepping into the 'real Australia'. On Saturday we went to the Royal Bathurst Show, which is the big event in town every year. I don't think I've ever been to an event with such variety - we went from a sheep shearing competition, to goat showing, to belly dancers, to fish n chips, to flashy tractors. My favourite was the food competitions, with showcases of the finalists in the Best Pastry/Best Jam/Best Small Cake - om!
We saw a dangerous snakes show, so two snake handlers talking through the most dangerous snakes in the country - so interesting. They had each snake in dark drawstring bags - the snakes were completely still until they opened the bags, then they wriggled like mad. They were in what was like an empty swimming pool, so the snakes were twisting around their feet, aagh.... There was an Animal Nursery as well, a big barn full of mini baby animals, I held a duckling and chick, and got the cutest video of brother and sister puppies, myself and Katja were in our element!
We cooled off at Flatrock afterwards, a rocky river with swimming holes, then that night we had a proper Aussie bbq, lovingly prepared by Ben and Katja. We tasted kangaroo steaks for the first time - just like steak, but with a slightly gamier taste. Best thing is it's 98% fat free - score! It's very much encouraged to eat it here, as kangaroos are considered a pest, it's meant to be good for the environment if they're eaten.
Ben's parents built boxes for possums in their garden, as if they're looking for shelter, they'll build homes in the roof. We were in Ben's old room, which is a converted garage, and the boxes were just behind it. They're really territorial, so we had Possum Wrestling on the tin roof all night - just hilarious. Thankfully we knew what it was, otherwise we would've been terrified with the screams and bumps. They came down on to the ground later on that night, just adorable - will stick a pic up of one.
Operation Job Hunt has been underway for a couple of weeks. We both have a few things on the go, so hopefully one of them will come to something soon. The market is pretty quiet here, but we're meeting as many friends of friends as we can to build up some contacts, so that's helping a lot too. We spent most of today having meetings and doing job applications, we finished up at around 4pm and walked ten minutes to a beach, ah the life! We're both anxious to get jobs tied down asap, so we can get on with enjoying the city.
Going to put some pics up now...
Big hello to everyone!
