Wow! I can hardly believe I am here in London! We had a very smooth direct flight - it was a little surreal, though. We board a plane in Vancouver - have a flawless take off, soaring up above the clouds, then we sit in our seats for 10 hours with a view of fluffly clouds beneath us. There was no reall sensation of moving, so by the time we got off the plane in London, the vegetation was so similar to Vancouver that it really didn't feel like we had gone anywhere at all!
We boarded a train at Gatwick Airport to take us into London. It was a nice rolling trip with lots of time to view the scenery. what we foreigners did not discern was that the train was only going about half speed - it felt like the skytrain. We only realized it when an anouncement came on apologizing for the delays due to a switch problem! As the passing greenery gave glimpses of clusters of red brick row houses, we started to feel we were abroad.
Susi & I shared a row on the plane with a lovely lady, Gillian. She lives in Vancouver now, but was originally from Sussex England. She was a wealth of excellent suggestions for our tour around england and totally engaged with us in planning our trip in more detail. What a blessing - she knew so much, and was in sync with the adventure of it all (she was even quite well versed in Brit lit). Gillian was truly a kindred spirit!
Our first day here we decided to ignore the jet lag & make an effort to immediately adapt to London time! We visited the British Library ( which houses many historical documents - to view the Magna Carta & old testament scriptures from the third century to a journal of jane Austen written when she was 15 ... Wow!)
We're exhausted now, so it's off to bed.
