Day 29: 1/10/12 Day 1 Tasmania
I wasn't a happy camper when the alarm went off- it felt like I'd only just got to bed! Mike brought me to the airport- I'm sure he was cursing me as I wanted to leave in plenty of time, just incase!!
It was a domestic flight and noone at any stage asked me for any sort of id- which I thought was ridiculous! Surely they should be looking for a passport when you check in! Anyway, they let me on the plane!! I did my best to sleep during the 3hr flight and I think I may have gotten about a half an hour sleep!
The airport was tiny- only one baggage carousel. There only seemed to be the one flight landing. I thought it would be much bigger. I had booked a shuttle bus so that took a while to drive around the city dropping people off.
At the hostel there were two men 40+ behind the counter. Neither of them really looked like they worked there! One was from Canada and he was ironing sheets (as you do!). The other guy seemed to be a local. They had a million questions about what I was doing here, how long I was staying, what I was working at, if I could get work....! I just wanted the key to the room! The local guy showed me a few places o a map to walk around and see and the other guy was constantly butting in with smart remarks! It was the longest check-in ever. Of course then, they put me on the third floor, there were no elevators and with all their talking, neither of them offered to help me with my bag!
Shortly after, I went for a walk around. The hostel is near the waterfront so there were lots of boats to see! There was a park aswell that used to be a graveyard and they just took away all the gravestones and put them on a wall. (Surely that's a recipe for ghosts!) I walked around the main streets then and looked at the shops. They have all the same shops they have in Brisbane really. The buildings and shop-fronts are all kind of old-fashioned looking though. It reminds of real middle-of-nowhere towns that they show in Anerican films- even though it's not that small. There were a few museums and things around but I was too late really to be going to them. And I wa wrecked! So I went back to the hostel. I spent some time on the Internet, read a bit and tried to sleep as much as I could. I'm supposed to be collected for the tour at 7am and I'd say it's going I be a busy five days so I don't want to be tired before I even start!!
