Day 11: 19/6/13
We were woken by horns beeping at 7:15 this morning. I'd guess it was the guide! We didn't have to leave until 9 so I don't know what the rush was! I had a shower this morning even though you'd never feel clean anyway as there is sand absolutely everywhere! The shower must be made for children or something as its half way down the wall and I had to go on my hunkers to wash my hair!
We had some cereal left for breakfast this morning. Our other box went missing though. I think It was in the trailer last night but it wasn't there this morning so either it was left somewhere else or someone stole it, which is highly possible! We were missing the lettuce, tomatoes, peanut butter and jam for toast or sandwiches and all the fruit and cereal bars! After breakfast we had to clear out the tents and hand back the box with all the pots and pans. We were ages waiting for everyone to be ready. I don't know what was keeping them!
I'd say it was nearly half nine when we left. We stopped at the shipwreck nearby. We had passed it for the last few days, but in the evening when the tide was in. So we stopped there this morning to have a closer look at it and take photos.
The ship had been owned by the Brittish navy and had been used on World War 1 and at some stage was used for shipments to Australia. In the 1930's it was deemed unsafe for sailing and it was sold to a Japanese company who attempted to tow it to Japan but they got caught in a cyclone and it ran aground. They just abandoned it on Fraser Island and its been there since the 1930's. It's a bit weird to have a shipwreck that no people were in!
We drove to Lake Wabby then. We parked on the beach and had to walk about 45 minutes through the forest to get there. At the end of the forest track there was a big sand dune. It was gorgeous- the sky was really blue and the sand really bright. On one side of the dune there were really green trees aswell. At the bottom of the dune was Lake Wabby surrounded on one side by trees and the other by sand. A group of us stayed at the top of the sand dune looking down at the lake as it was sunny at the top. A few people went down to the lake and only about 2 people went in! It was too cold to! We had about an hour sitting there and then we walked back to the jeeps to head for lunch.
We had only bread and butter left for lunch so most of us went and bought something. I sat with one of the other groups with the English and Welsh people for a while. They had been in the lead drivers car and had only been driving today and then they started arguing about who was going to drive next! I offered to move out of our jeep so they could drive ours but they didn't take me up on it!
Kyle drove our jeep back to the ferry and spent most of the time trying to spin in the sand. We had to go up a big hill then near the end of the track and with all his showing off he got stuck and had to reverse out and go again!
We didn't see any dolphins or anything on the ferry this time. Patrick drove after the ferry and tried to spin the car aswell and the lead driver had to get out and told him he wouldn't let finish the drive if he kept it up. So, we just about got back safe and sound!
I spent a little while when we got back having a shower, trying to get rid of a mountain of sand and repacking the bag for the bus in the morning. Then we all went to the bar in the hostel as they were giving us two free jugs for our jeep. Of course our jeep did appear for that!! We had the drink and then the lads were all going back to their room to drink goon. I just joined the other jeep of girls then. There were three English girls- Emma, Katherine and Erica and a Welsh couple- Rhiannon and Nathan. I chatted away to them for a while and then one girl was annoyed as she had only had one glass out of the free jugs but others had more so I decided to go to bed and keep out of the drama! It would have been nice to have been in a jeep full of girls, but not if they kept arguing!!
A lot of people had told me Fraser Island was one of the best things they had done in Australia but I didn't think so. It cost about 400 to do it and the main aim with our group anyway was to get back to the campsite and drink for the night. You can drink anywhere!! The sights were nice but there was no craic with our group at all as they were all just off their head. If you had a group of your own friends there you would probably have a ball alright but I wouldn't say it was the best thing to do here.
