Day 9: 17/6/13
We had to get up this morning at 6:30 so we could check out, get free pancakes, listen to another long talk about what we need to do in Fraser and get our jeeps ready to drive.
There are eight in a jeep and four jeeps in our group. The first one is our lead driver or guide so the people in that one can't drive it. There are three jeeps following his jeep then. Out of the eight of us in our jeep, only four could drive and I didn't even want to drive so that left only three to argue about the driving, which was fine as there would be plenty of driving over the three days.
I our group we had Ell, a girl from Italy who was on my Whitsundays trip. Then the rest of them were all on a road trip heading up the coast together. There were three English guys- Kyle, Elliott and Luke. Then there was a Swiss guy called Patrick, a Swiss girl called Yarra and a French guy called Simone. It's a bit weird that they all knew each other before the trip.
We drove to the ferry. That was mostly driving on normal road and then the last bit was on the beach where we waited for the ferry. It was a tiny little ferry which held about 10 jeeps and it only took about 15 minutes to get over to the island. We saw dolphins swimming in the water alongside the boat, so that was cool. You can only see water splashing and then see a little bit of grey but we were told they were dolphins!
Kyle drove then when we got off the ferry, which was all driving on the beach. He's the one that said yesterday evening that he didn't want anyone driving if they were going to drink. He spent half the time trying to drag the jeep in the sand and send us all flying back and over! I wasn't impressed. The lead driver pulled up and came back to tell him to cop on!
We stopped up in a little resort village then to have lunch. We had been told by others that did the tour that there wasn't half enough food but it looks like there's plenty!
We drove then to Lake Mckenzie which was an inland track with a dirt road and trees all around. It was a very pretty lake but it was way too cold to swim in. Some people went in but a lot didn't either. I didn't either as it was cold enough sitting on the sand looking at the lake! Ell and I walked around the lake then to another lookout on the lake. It was really pretty and the sand there was really white.
Patrick drove us then and had a near miss or two with the trees!! We went back to the shop then to get our trailer full of food again to head back towards the campsite.
Ell drove back to the camp and she had to drive over rocks and everything! It was pretty tough going! I wouldn't want to drive with all the others in the car as they spend most of the time shouting to go faster and spin the car and stuff. On the way back we saw some dingoes running along the beach. They started chasing us and they managed to find the trailer with the food and chased that one for a while!
We got to the Campsite around half four in the afternoon and we were there for the whole evening. I thought it was a bit early to be back as we hadn't done much in the whole day but it gets dark by 6 so I guess they just wanted us to get our stuff sorted in the daylight. There were little tents for us to sleep in. They were three-man tents and I was sharing with Ell and a girl called Vanessa who was in another jeep. We just had a mat, like a yoga mat to put on the ground and then I'd hired a sleeping bag, but it was pretty flat and there was no pillow! There was just enough room for the three mats in the tent and you couldn't stand up or anything, just kneel- so it was nice and cost! The bathrooms were a good two minute trek through another campsite aswell! We had only got there and the water went so we couldn't flush any of the toilets or wash our hands- so it was nice and stinky!
One person from each jeep had to go to the drivers campsite to get pots and pans to cook with. The Swiss guy went to get ours and then went to the tent where half our jeep were smoking weed. He couldn't remember where he had left it then and everyone had to wait until they were finished whatever they were at in the tent so we could find our stuff and start cooking. Four of them smoke and four don't, so us four were left with all the cooking and washing up as they were just in the own little world! They did manage to eat though!
There was a campfire on site and everyone sat around there after dinner as it was freezing without the fire! There was another group sharing the camp with us and they were a day ahead of us so they were just finished their second day. I happened to sit beside some of them and was chatting to a Scottish guy, a Dublin girl and a guy from Oughterard who were good Craic! There were actually two brothers from Oughterard and I was talking to them both at some stages. They were into GAA so it was good to talk football with them! One was living in London and one in Sydney so they weren't even at home any more but they knew all about Galway football! We were talking about the senior team debacle in the championship and the u21 win. One was saying that they thought Alan would be the next senior manager after his u21 win so we'll have to wait and see! They followed ladies football too and they knew Shell's name as they knew Sinead Burke and Niamh Fahy and followed lots of the games.
It was good Craic chatting anyway and we all had some goon so that made it a bit more entertaining!
