Day 51: 20/8/12
I had a great sleep in this morning. I heard the other girls (who have no English by the way) getting up in the morning and I just rolled over!!
I forgot yesterday that I saw one of the funniest things I had seen in a long time. When I was walking down the street a dog crossed in front of me. It was a big lassie type dog. Someone had put an adults t-shirt on the dog and it was hanging down touching the ground. When he was trying to walk he was getting his back legs caught on the t-shirt and he couldn't get them out!! He just kept hopping around the place. Eventually he freed them but as soon as he went walking again he had a leg caught! I was roaring laughing on the side of the road!!
Anyway, back to today! I didn't have the boat thing til the afternoon so I had breakfast/lunch (considering I was up so late!). In the restaurant I ordered scrambled eggs and a hot chocolate. I wasn't intending on having them together but I didn't know how to say that. The waiter came back a few minutes later and started talkin at me. I'd no idea what he was saying so he went away eventually! The woman at the next table came over to see if I spoke English. Apparently the waiter had wanted to know did I want the food and hot chocolate together. So she went to tell him I wanted the chocolate after! The guy with her looked very confused!! The food was lovely anyway and the hot chocolate had baileys in it- yummy!!!
Then I wandered round he town a bit. I was passing the port where ye office was for the company I was doing the boy trip with. So I thought Id confirm the time. The email I had said 3pm and the guy at reception was talking to the agency and they said 4:30. Luckily I went in to confirm because it was actually 2:30! I did a little bit more browsing and then it was time for the boat!
Before getting on we had to go through a passenger control building. They didn't check anything but we had to pay a tax of 7pesos. The boat was big- inside everyone had tables and chairs to sit at and there was a little shopeen. We sailed out of the bay (I think we were on the beagle channel- have to confirm that with a map, but they kept talking about it!!). We could get out to walk around the edge of the deck. It was freezing but the scenery was lovely. Snow capped mountains all around! We pulled up near an island and it was full of king cormorants (which look like penguins) and sea lions. The sea lions starting roaring and shouting which was cool. Some of them are huge- you can see why they are called lions. The next island had some more sea lions. They are very smelly creatures!! Finally we came to a tiny island with the lighthouse that is in all pictures of Ushuaia. I think it signals the entrance to Ushuaia port. At all the islands I took loads of pictures and of the scenery all around the bay. There were five Argentinian women in the same seat as me inside. They had no English really but one of them was able to string enough words together for them to figure out I was from Ireland and they were from Argentina. They were nice anyway cos they were able to take pictures of me with the various islands and stuff!
After the bought I wandered round some of the shops. I bought a pair of earings with the national stone of Argentina- rodochrisita or something! It's nice and corally anyway!
Then I went to a cafe for some dinner. Afterwards I went to the Galway Irish pub for a drink. No one in it really but was grand. It started to fill up then and the waitress was really rushed off her feet- she wasn't a happy camper! Even though it ended up practically full there still wasn't one Person that looked like they might speak English!
On the way back to the hostel it was actually snowing which was lovely!!
By the way when I say I'm from Ireland noone knows what I'm saying. I have to say Irlanda. I think it's ridiculous that when someone says the name is their country in their own language people don't understand it. Why do we learn different names for countries anyway? Why don't we just learn the name and the pronunciation of the people from that country?!? As you can see I have had plenty of time to think about this!!
