If it weren'tfor all the rice and noodle i think i would have losta lot of weight by now!!No more lazing by the pool, we have all been hard at work!! imat the outdoor nursery for my first 9 day rotation which started on monday. this is the last stage of the rehab process for the orangs, theyre 5 years and upwards and there are 17of them. Our day consists of trekking throught the jungle to feeding platforms which are situtated at different places in the jungle (getting further in to the jungle), we shout 'come' in malay to the orangs, mostof them follow by swinging on the rops from tree to tree but a few have to be carried as theyre lkazy. weleave them bananas ('pisang') and milk on the platforms and then have to encourage them to climb by shouting in malay. we have to wait for a while once theyre up the trees because if they see we have gone they will follow us back instead of staying in the jungle. gradually we can walk quietly so they dont know we're going!!
it has been really really fun and im starting to recognise which orang is who now! there are 2, naru and rosalinda, who we have to carry or hold their hand and walk them to the platform. i take rosalinda and have fallen for her! shes lovely and gentle and always sucks her bottomlip! i have lots of stories to tell you all but theres too many so i guess ill share them all when im back in enhgland. i will tellyou about angkong though, hes very cheeky lad and likes to pull your trousers down and throw papaya at you. he refuses to walk or climb to the platforms so you end up dragging him!once he was hanging on a branch above me and i felt a massive tug - he grabbed my hair and nearly got my hair band! hes like a naughty child!
other than 'work' (beats the 9-5 jobs eh?!) last saturday night we whad a welcome meal with lots of the rangers and staff, it was fun and good to get to know them. we had to have a welcome shot of rice wine, as we arent malaysians we had to put a bit on our neck and tummy to makie it go down easier! sunday we went to mile 4(town complex) for a meal and to a club. was good, woman in our group is a poledancer so she danced! and no i didnt get on the pole amelia! Last night we went to mile4 again for a pizza! ahhhh yummy not noodles or rice lol! and then went to a karaoke bar.
wednesday, thur, fri we have off and we;re going to Sipadan Island for diving and snorkelling - apparently meant to be the bestplace to dive in S Asia and one of the best in the world so hopefully we'll be in for a treat!
Saturday we start our next rotation, which is jungle trekking and surveys for me!
Happy Easter!
