I am going to try and abbreviate our four days in Venice as one entry. It was strange arriving in Venezia by train as a couple, with previous arrivals on a Trinity tour group bus with 50 other people. With large bags and Venice's unique access issues, I made a point of booking accommodation only 200 metres from Santa Lucia train station.
Our four days comprised exploring areas of Venice previously undiscovered. We travelled by vaparetto to both the colourful Burano, and the surprisingly long promenades and sandy beaches of Lido, here also finding a huge outdoor market devoid of tourists. We also discovered extended gardens at the eastern tip of the mainland around Giardini and Santa Elena. We found so many beautiful areas that were far less touristy, areas which I had been oblivious to in the narrow exposure provided by my two prior Trinity tours.
Loretta became ill on the third day and just wanted to lie down and rest. So after ensuring she was comfortable and regular check ins, I used segments of the second day of our 48 hour vaparetto pass to explore the islands of San Giorgio and Guidecca, again savouring areas where tourists are rarely seen.
Yes, Venice will always be the first place I book when planning European travel. Those night time walks and vaparetto rides with lights reflecting on waterways and illuminating Byzantine building facades in every direction will never cease to leave me in awe . Venezia always leaves me craving for more, necessitating further returns.
