Saturday-John:
Spyros collects us in his Jaguar and takes us along the South-Eastern coastal road towards Sounio. We don't go all the way to the cape, however we stop frequently to see some spectacular coastline dotted with islands aplenty. At one point, we stop for coffee on the beach at a yacht club watching young children in wetsuits receiving instruction in sailboarding. Later we stop at another port and see Greek fisherman endeavouring to sell their fresh morning catch to locals. Prior to this trip, we had no awareness that the Greek mainland was surrounded by such beautiful coastline with crystal clear waters.
As we head back, Spyros takes us to lunch at a Greek restaurant with enough food to serve a dozen people! I have been feeling a little unwell today, so we are a little embarrassed at having to leave so much food in our plates. Spyros returns us to our motel and that night we catch the metro and tram to the home of Teo and his wife, Maria, who also provide us with a lovely Greek meal. We also meet Elena, Teo's aunt, and later on, Mikaela, Teo's granddaughter, appears at the door. We are not sure how she got there, unless 5 year olds are allowed to ride motorinis in Greece.
We say our farewells and return to our hotel to find that the hotel staff have us four pieces of Greek Christmas cake and two small bottles of ouzo by our bedside table for our last night in Athens. Wow! Like Bologna, we are very sad to leave. PLEASE NOTE: our hotel in Venice has NO Wi-Fi so we will try and catch up when we get to Interlaken.
