hello! its been a while but here we are in Airlie Beach which is a bit of a backpackers paradise full of worryingly young looking people and great dodgy souvenir shops...and pubs. always a good thing! we left Byron Bay for Nimbim for some souvenirs (i'll explain later) and drove through some amazingly beautiful mountains and forests. headed to surfers paradise which was disappointingly just a big city really. the beaches were great and long and sandy but the weather was foul so stayed in the van during the day mostly and got a bit cabin fever-y! then on to Noosa which had been recommended by the guys' friends and that was nice, pretty expensive but we had good weather and did some surfing (yes!! me surfing!!) i didnt do badly but i'd be damned if i could stand on that thing so i did what the instructor helpfully called lifeguard surfing (on your knees, lean back), so yes im sooo much better than the others (alice was really good at it i must say and she surfed all the way to the beach!) we went to Steve Irwin's zoo which was great and i had my picture taken with a very sleepy and slightly alarmed looking koala! that was a very hot day. we had a quick stop off at rainbow beach which wasnt that friendly and we nearly ran out of petrol on the way to our next port of call which could have been embarrassing but a friendly trucker made sure we got there ok. we went on to Hervey Bay where we made friends with ducks and loads of different birds which ate all our crusts. Hervey bay itself was fairly sleepy but we did havce some good mexican food and went to Fraser Island and did some 4x4 driving (well, i did my passenger act!!) and got thouroughly shaken around. Lake Mackenzie was beautiful and the sand dune at Lake Wabby was pretty huge even tho we got caught in a bit of a downpour on the way back up! yeah the weather was pretty bad on the island anxd our tent nearly got blown away on the first night! we stayed at an aborigini run campsite where they had loads of slightly tame dingoes who werent frightening at all just like a lovely but really dangerous dog. lol im painting a good picture eh? so yeah lots of bumpy and boggy driving on fraser, went to the fizzy rockpools known as the champagne pools which was a trek but really fun too. got some new strap marks and everyone admired them. went back to hervey bay for the night (and the best shower of my life after 3 days without one) and then on to Rockhampton which we thought was a huge place and very happening but it was a monday night so we just went for a steak (poor veggie alice!) we had a Wagyu steak which was soooooo good. its the one where the cows have been massaged and fed beer and played classical music and all that jazz but it did make one of thge best steqaks ive ever had! met a german brother and sister in rockhampton who had a Wicked camper van too, apparently they had loads of problems with theirs and we said nope, no probs with ours touch wood. little did we know that we had a small fuel leak which we discovered the next day after i got diesel all over me, doh!! so yes, here we are in Airlie Beach now! i ate kangaroo last night, which was ok, quite gamey and tough! off the Whitsunday Islands on Monday and a spot of scuba in the great barrier reef which i cant wait for. and the weather has become lovely tho sadly our beach is full of deadly box jellyfish so cant go in there, we have a man made lagoon so may pop down there later. Cheers! Lxxx
