Well hello there and thank you for tuning into another episode of the Long Way Round! getting in the groove with this writing business!! I last left you with tales of Dingo Patrol on Fraser Island and all the other shenanigans that goes with 4x4-ing on the worlds largest sand island! anyway, back to the stories!!
Fraser Island was an absolute awesome experience, definately one that I will not forget for a while! I truly apologise as I cannot seem to upload the pictures but I have loads so dont worry!! As we left Fraser Island, we headed back onto the mainland for one more nights accommodation before continuing with our journey a little further up the coast toward Airlie Beach. had a very good night in Hervey Bay, went for a massive group meal and booze up then headed to the "nightclub" that our resort had in store for us. I've been in some worse places put it that way! As usual, the dangerous duo were the entertainment for the night and getting into a very bad habit of being the "who are those people in our photos" hee hee! Lloyd got his Jack hat on and before we knew it, we were dancing the funky chicken to compete with some break dancers. love it! That night, things turned out for the worse.
Queensland is known as a tropical area of Australia, very humid and loadsa weird people. That night, Queensland saw the largest flash floods in 10 years or so. Roads were closed and the show was on hold! out of the 11 people that went on the Fraser Island trip, 9 of which would be going on the same sailing trip to the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef, so we decided to stick together. we rang around and after much debate, we decided to leave Hervey Bay and head as far north as we could without getting stuck in the floods. We managed to get to a small town called Rockhampton, around a 4 hour drive from Hervey. Luckily we also found accommodation as recommended by my Bible - Lonely Planet. We arrived at the hotel, not hostel, HOTEL around 230 in the morning, 20 bucks a night for a double room, cannot go wrong i'm sorry.....that is until the bar manager says to us that the top floor of the hotel is haunted. Yeh right, ok boy bach whatever. 2 of the girls that travelled up with us - Tegan and Kate stayed in room number 35, top floor, where a woman hung herself about 70 odd years ago. starting to get spooky?? that room was above yours truly's room! that night, i heared a good half an hours worth banging on the ceiling (confirmed by Tegan and Kate) and little Lloydy had a dream or so he thought. Chris, the other heterosexual male in the group also had the same "dream". Most Haunted would have loved it there!
Rockhampton was a tidy little place, the next day we just wondered around looking for things to see and do and what mischief we could get up to hee hee. Bowling was our one and only option as we couldnt find anything else to do. So, bowling took up about 2 hours of our day. great. The three males of the group decided to sneak off from the girlies as there was rugby on the TV, being shown in the hotel so that took up most of our time and it would've been rude of us to not drink in a hotel pub so that was that. Unanimous decision!!
Good news came through the next day that some of the roads had now opened and Buses were now going further North. we stayed at Spook Central for one more night before deciding to leave for Mackay the next day. Mackay is an even smaller town than Rocky, with absolutely nowt to do but watch some of the local people. by watching some of the local people, we mean point and laugh. this place was seriously weird, as in inbred weird. one night was more than enough. but good things come to those who wait as Mr Guiness does state - Roads were now clear up to Airlie! tune in next time folks for tales of being stranded on an island in the middle of a ruddy typhoon!
