After a 10 hour bus journey from Uyuni we arrived in Sucre and we were very pleasantly surprised. It was like walking around a European city like Madrid or Barcelona. Its a university town and also the judicial capital of Bolivia so lots of students and lawyers strolling around the place enjoying the sunshine! The heat was also a welcome surprise after the bitter cold on the Salt Flats,so we delayered and decided that this was where we were going to go back to school and learn Spanish for a while and try out living with a local Bolivian family.
We had a recommendation from someone we met along the way about the Bolivian Spanish School in Sucre so we decided to go and look at the school ourselves first before booking anything. We met with the principal and decided that this was the place for us and they also organised that we could both stay together with a family. We ended up living with the secretary of the school Anita and her 15 year old son Jamito which was a great experience. Her sister lived there too or maybe she just came for breakfast, lunch and dinner but she was always there anyway...no sign of any man in the house but i think maybe he worked away during the week!
We had school everyday from 8.30am - 12.30pm just the 2 of us with our teacher Christian. It was a very intense 4 hours and there was no way we could have done more than that in the day as your concentrating for every minute of those 4 hours. Also we had homework every day that kept us going in the evening. There was a lovely cafe behind our house Cafe Mirador that we would go to every day to do our homework and you could see the whole of Sucre. We absolutely loved the Spanish school and really got into the learning of the verbs and the different rules...totally different to our Mount Mercy and Colaiste days!! The school would have various activities in the evenings like bbqs and wolley ball (which was basically volley ball in a squash court) but they were good fun to get to know the other teachers and students in the school.
Before too long we finished school and it was time to move on from Sucre but not before we got to see some sights around the place. We went on the Dino Truck to a nearby quarry where hundreds of dinosaur prints were discovered only 10 years ago when the machinery used there uncovered them, They were really amazing to see and so distinct too after all these years. We also travelled a bit outside of Sucre to Castillo de Glorieta,a huge old castle that used to house visiting Royals to the area. There was spectacual views from the towers and an interesting bit of culture of the area.
Next stop La Paz.
Sucre Done!
