We crossed the border at 6 in the morning, leaving the Argentinian town of Villazon and arriving in the Bolivian town of La Quiaca. From La Quiaca we took a bus to Tupiza which took three and a half hours. Tupiza is a really small town and there is not much to do there. It is famous for horse riding but we were not interested in doing it as we had just been in an Estancia. The reason we went to Tupiza was to do the salt flats trip from there as we had heard it was the best way to do it. It was a four day tour and a lot more expensive then doing the trip from the usual places but well worth it.
When we arrived in Tupiza we checked in to La torre hotel with a few people we had met on the bus. There was also a tourist agency in the hotel so we were able to book the tour from there. We had been told about it by people who had been there and they had given it good reviews so 5 of us booked it for the next day.
The next day we took off on the trip in our jeep. There were 3 English girls in the jeep with us and another jeep with another 4 people in it. The trip was simply unreal!! We had a great guide and a great cook on our trip. The first day we drove for almost 8 hours stopping off at various Lagoons and a place they call ghost town. We also stopped at various points to check out the amazing scenery. At night we would just stay in little shacks with no water or electricity. It was absolutely freezing at night with temperatures reaching -18C !! The second day we did much the same including going to a hot springs. On the third day we went to see thousands of Flamingos and also geysers which were pretty cool. The highest we were at was 5000 metres above sea level on the second night so we all suffered a liitle from the altitude!! On the last night we stayed in a little place made completely of salt and we were able to have a few drinks as we were only at around 3000 metres. On the fourth day we got up at 6 to head to the salt flats for sunrise. The salt flats were absolutely amazing!! We hung around there for a while and then headed for Uyuni where we stayed the night. Uyuni is a horrible town and we wanted to move straight on but we stayed the night as we were suffering from the altitude.
The next morning we headed for Sucre which is ten hours away from Uyuni.
Salt flats done!!
