G'day all!
Once again apologies we haven't blogged in a while but now we are both back on the road hopefully they'll be a bit more frequent!
So me and Soph are now travelling solo. She's headed off up the East Coast and i've made my way to the desert! We had a great last week in Melbourne, staying with a friend of Sophs family. It was great, our own room and lots of lovely meals. On our final weekend they took us up to their beach house and we had a lovely bbq and spent Aussie Mothers Day, having a picnic and then a walk up to the Yu Yang ranges.
I took the overnight bus to Adealide about 2 weeks ago and met up with a friend from our Kiwi Experience. We stayed there for a week, just chilling in a lovely hostel and getting excited to watch the UEFA Final, much to my dissapointment it all ended in tradgedy!
After a week in Adeliade we took a 2 day tour up to Alice Springs which was a hell of a lot of driving but a lot of fun. Our minibus was full and everyone was really friendly. We stopped overnight at a minig town in the middle of nowhere called Coober Pedy. It was one of the strangest places i've ever been - everyone lives underground where the temperature is a constant 22 degrees and our bunk hostel was also underground - best nights sleep ive had in a while!
Up early the next morning for the final leg up to Alice, we had a quick tour around a home in the mining town which was v.strange and all a bit too claustrophobic for my liking. Once we arrived in Alice we checked into our hostel and hit the hay straight away ready for our early start on a 3 day tour of Ayers Rock.
Picked up at 6am sharpish by our tour guide Daniel we headed straight to The Rock and it was really fantastic. We did the Base Walk in the baking heat and then cooked up a cmapfire dinner to watch the sunset over the rock - bliss! We then had a few attempts at the digerido before retiring to our Swags ( really cosy sleeping bag) and sleeping in our 5000 star hotel!
Up at the crack of dawn to watch the sunrise at the red centre was again an amazing sight and my photos really don't do it justice! We then headed to another site called The Olgas which is an agglomeration of 36 mounds - just down the road from Ayers Rock. Here we did a 3 hour walk which was such an effort, thank god we'd gotten up early because as soon as the heat picks up the place is a buzz with flys which are soooooooo annoying!
That night we cooked up another bush delight and slept under the stars again at the Kings Canyon resort ready for a ridiculously early start the next day.4am our guide came kicking our sleeping bags to get us up and ready for a hike up ' Heart Attack Hill'. It was absolutely freezing but well worth it for the views we had at the top. Just in time for sunrise and some amazing sights over the ' Lost City' & ' The Garden of Eden'.
Our guide was fantastic and really gave us an insight into the aboriginal culture which is i've not seen much while being on the coast.
I flew to Darwin yesterday and am enjoying the baking heat and just chilling out at the beach - although boxed jelly fish mean swimming isn't allowed!doh! I'm heading off on Monday to the Kakadu National Park for 3 days of hiking & croc watching which should be fun!
Hope all is well wherever you are xxx
