Soon it will be time to say adios to Spain & bonjour to France, once again! I have a bone to pick with Spain actually…isn't it SUPPOSED to always be sunny here?? Well I didn't get rained on ONCE in London - not ONCE! But here, it's been rainy & overcast the past few days! What's with that? Well, we did get a little sunshine this afternoon which was lovely…got my fingers crossed for warmer weather in Nice…
Because of the rain yesterday, Kelly & I abandoned our beach plans to wander the streets of the open-air museum instead. When we had been there the night before so see the Spanish dancing, we fell in love with the place & decided we definitely needed to spend some quality time there. We picked our way through the cute little stores, looking at beautiful mosaics & Spanish fans, tasting chocolate & sampling Sangria, & generally wishing we could buy everything in sight! We also got to watch the making of some beautiful glass bowls & bull statues, which was amazing. The strange thing was, one of the guys had brought his kid along to work & he was just standing around near the 13000 degrees Celcius furnace no guard or safety protection in sight…the guys who were actually working with the glass didn't have any gloves on or safety glasses or anything! We're like um…hello OH&S risk!! You would SO not get away with that kind of thing in Australia :P
We had lunch at a small restaurant in a little courtyard, huddled under one of those amazing heat lamp thingys. We nibbled on marinated cheeses, fresh white bread, & delicious hot chocolate! A simple, but surprisingly satisfying meal - & as always, nice and cheap ;) Then later in the day we decided the sample some wine at one of the cellars, where the lady commented on how "simple" our taste in wine was, wondering aloud "what would you think if you tried our more complex wines??" haha Kelly & I thought it was hilarious…it was an example of something we've frequently experienced in Barcelona, which is terrible, TERRIBLE service (particularly in restaurants) that lies somewhere between bored indifference & completely despising you for daring to come & eat/drink in their restaurant. We cheerily asked her if she was having a good day, & she told us in no uncertain terms that no, she was not. Well, that's just lovely then! :P After several more glasses of "simple" wine, we were hardly concerned though, but when she made us switch tables unnecessarily to accommodate another three guests & continued to glare at us angrily, we decided it might be best to move on!
We slowly made our way home, where we spent some time hanging out in the dining room with some very interesting German characters! The hostel didn't have a bed for Kelly that night, but allowed her to stay anyway, & we squished in together in my tiny single bunk bed, which was thankfully a lot bigger than some of the others I've slept in of late!
Today we took it very easy & took full advantage of the siestas again ;) In the afternoon we took a stroll in the sunshine & had tapas in a café nearby the hostel. AMAZING food, TERRIBLE service! Once again! Fortunately, the food's amazingness did actually make up for the service…deep fried camembert with a red berry sauce, ham croquettes, battered mushrooms with garlic aoli, catalan bread (with a fresh tomato sauce), & potatoes with spicy sauce - yum yum yummy! :D
