Yesterday Kelly & I gave our legs a work out with a whole lot of walking! First we stopped by the Sagrada Familia - Gaudi's famous creation that is still under construction. It's unlike anything else I've seen in Europe. Very unusual architecture & decorative style. We spent about 5 minutes walking around the whole thing to find the end of the line of people queuing up to get inside before deciding we would be satisfied with admiring it from the outside! It would have taken over an hour to get inside!! So instead we decided to continue on…after stopping briefly for the world's most expensive milkshakes/frappucinos (sucks when the prices aren't displayed & you only find out at the time they're asking you to hand over the money!) & some Spanish churros. Kelly had never tried churros (for the uninitiated -before so I felt this was a necessary experience for to have whilst in Spain! :)
We then trekked up the hill to the Parc Guell, which displays a lot of Gaudi's work, along with the house he used to live in. There's a beautiful view over the city of Barcelona & lots of seats around the edge of the Parc decorated in detailed mosaic. We sat in the sunshine & listened to buskers playing lively Spanish music, before continuing the trek up to the very top of the mountain…well…hill I suppose. I don't know, it kinda felt more like a mountain to me once we reached the top!! By this time we were well & truly ready for a mid-afternoon siesta! So we stopped on the way back down for lunch & a glass of wine (1.25 euro a glass!!!), which left me very VERY sleepy indeed, before navigating the Spanish tube system back to our hostel for some Spanish siesta time :D
In the evening we went to a beautiful part of town that's been created to emulate the feel of the Spanish streets of olde to have tapas & watch a Spanish dancing show. It was an amazing evening! We dined on chorizo & other yummy meats, cheese, bread, jalapenos, small potato-wedge kinda things, & squid, with crème brulee for desert. Oh, & a glass of sangria to wash it all down of course! ;) We sat in the beautiful restaurant with lanterns strung overhead, watching the Spanish dancers twirl & stomp & flick their hands. It's the most incredible thing to watch - they're so passionate & they often look quite angry! I swear those chicks could kill you with one stomp of their heeled shoes! :P And the music - oh, it was just amazing!! Spanish guitars & haunting singing! Kelly & I both agreed it was a truly magical evening.
We walked back through the cobbled streets, poking our noses into stores selling beautiful oil paintings & decorative Spanish fans & cursed the fact that we couldn't decorate our houses with all this stuff…A) because neither of us actually own a house yet haha, and B) because it'd be a long, LONG way to transport all that stuff back to Perth! I mean, unless we just buy a villa in Spain and stay here forever that is… :P
