Friday morning I took the metro straight down town to Soho in the morning to explore that area of town & do a bit of shopping (mostly of the window variety). It's a really hip, arty part of town, with lots of small, alternative shops & funky cafes. While I was walking around I managed to stumble right through the middle of a fashion photo shoot (I seem to have a habit of doing this…last time I was in NYC I stumbled right through a film set!). I picked up lunch at a great little place called Chutney Café, that specialized in various flavours of Chutney (surprise surprise!) & had high Zagat ratings, although I kinda ordered without knowing what I was getting…I thought it might be some kind of wrap thing…turns out it was a big crepe-like thing filled with stuff! Very yummy, although a little tricky to eat on the train…probably wouldn't have opted for takeaway if I knew what I was getting myself into! Haha
But I'd decided to take a trip down to Coney Island in the afternoon & that's a LONG way on the subway, so I figured I'd better get a wriggle on. Coney Island is a coastal suburb right on the southern tip of Brooklyn, known for it's beach, boardwalk, & theme park. Oh, & some famous hot dog place where they have a hot dog eating competition every Labour Day & then display the winner's names in flashing lights on a giant billboard for the rest of the year. When you step of the train at Coney Island it instantly smells like a fairground…hot corn on the cob mixed with fairy floss, hotdogs, & warm pretzels. And it's kinda exactly as you'd expect; a little run down & tacky with lots of families giving away fistfuls of money to shoot targets in an attempt to win giant stuffed teddy bears or go on rickety rollercoasters that look like they haven't been serviced in 20 years or so…
I decided to save my pennies & go for a stroll along the boardwalk instead. It was a really hot day & people were sprinting across the wide stretch of burning sand down below to get to the waterfront, where colourful beach umbrellas were dotted all along the shoreline. I stopped under a gazebo & lay under on one of the benches for an hour or so listening to an entire John Mayer album…
Later on I took the train back to Manhattan to Canal Street to check out what that was all about. I lasted all of about 15 minutes before the throngs of crowds became too much to bear & I veered back onto the quieter side streets of Soho. I do love Manhattan, but there's nothing like the quiet, non-pushy streets of Perth :)
