On Wednesday morning I went down town to continue my exploration of Manhattan. I spent ages in the FAO (hmm…or something like that!) toy store marveling at giant boxes of nerd candy & cuddly enormous fluffy stuffed animals. I even found a whole "Olivia the Pig" section! Unfortunately I really didn't have room in my bag for a giant stuffed Olivia the Pig or an Olivia the Pig doll house…I also went to the Apple Store, which is open 24 hours a day, although not entirely sure why you'd need to stop in & pick up an iphone at 3:00AM on a Wednesday morning…but hey! If you wanted to, you could! It (like many other things in NYC) was giant (are you noticing a trend here…I really need to use a thesaurus…). I had a play on an iphone 4, which I found surprisingly fun, given my normal aversion to technology…I have spent the last 7 or 8 years clinging desperately to my brick Nokia phones for as long as they will last me, but I feel I may finally be rounding the corner, finally ready to surrender to the touch screen phone. *Sigh*, we'll see…I'll have to learn how to use it first! :P
After a morning of exploration I picked up my tickets to see Wicked, the musical, before heading back to the hostel for an afternoon power nap. Then in the evening I went down town to meet up with Mrs Ed (well, Janalie, I suppose I should call her now that I'm a grown up too…but I think in my mind she will always be Mrs Ed! Hehe). She's the mother of one of my good friends from high school, Pip, who I lived down the road from in Rossmoyne all through high school. We shared lifts to school & I spent many an afternoon in Mrs Ed's kitchen being fed delicious home-made goods (everybody knows, Mrs Ed is an AMAZING cook!).
So she just so happened to be over in NYC on her way to an annual ballet camp that she attends & she got in contact with me for a catch up. We went out to dinner at a very New York style restaurant close to Times Square, where she shouted me a lovely meal and a cocktail. I tried a French Manhattan on Mrs Ed's recommendation - delish! :) Then we both went to the show after dinner, which was fabulous. Wicked is the story of what happened in the land of Oz before Dorothy arrived. So you find out all about how the Wicked Witch of the West came to be considered so wicked…it was a really great story! Glenda (Gah-lenda…for anyone who's seen the show…) was by far my favourite character; she was hilariously blonde & bubbly with a terrific laugh! It was a great night out, & so nice to see a friendly face from home; Mrs Ed gave me a big "mum hug", which really, only mothers know how to give, which will tide me over for the next month until I get to see my own mum back in Perth :)
