Today we travelled by train from Rome to Naples (& decided not to stay long in order to avoid death by mafia), then Naples to Sorrento, then on the bus from Sorrento to Positano. I'm really glad I wasn't in charge of driving, because that is one scary road!! It's like this teeny tiny narrow road, high up on the mountain face, with a sheer drop off the side down into the deep blue ocean very VERY far below…The Italians still zoom along at a pretty considerable speed, but they have a pretty good system of honking their horns loudly before they round a sharp corner, which apparently avoids most head on collisions…yikes! :S Anyway it's totally worth it because the view is spectacular! It's a bit like Cinque Terre on a slightly bigger scale. And we did make it there in one piece…
We jumped out of the bus & found ourselves on the side of the side of a very narrow road. We edged our way along the road, following the directions to the hostel. Given that there's barely enough room for two cars to pass each other on the road, you can imagine there's not much room for a couple of girls with giant packs on their back to walk along the side of the road. Oh, and of course, there's many, many Vespas that go zooming past as well. But we made it up the road without being sideswiped & found our hostel and…wow. Wow, wow, wow. Oh, I never want to leave this place. It's called Brikette hostel, & it has a HUGE balcony looking out over the coast, where the view is just beautiful.
And the best the about the hostel is….the puppies!!! There are two dogs that live here which belong to the owner that are named Kiki & Loui, & they are actually my dream dogs! They are two King Charles Spaniels, one is black and white, and the other is caramel and white & they are just so playful & friendly. They'll hop up on the couch beside you & rest their heads on your lap while you're typing away on your laptop, or bring a ball over to you for a game of fetch. And of course they get plenty of exercise running up & down the many ridiculously steep stairs around here. If I didn't like the people who run this hostel so much (they are also lovely) I swear I would seriously consider dog-napping them. Christina (the owner) said Kiki is light enough o carry around in your handbag, & she'll just stay put! She also said that Esther & I are welcome to take the dogs out for a walk tomorrow because we told her how much we love them :D
In the evening we had a cocktail from the hostel bar out on the balcony & basically just sat there marveling at the amazing amazingness that is where we are & what we're doing & just how lucky we are to be here! We'd met one of the guys in our dorm a little earlier & he joined us for dinner at a restaurant up on the next main "level" of Positano - a mere 100 stairs or so higher than the hostel. We were treated to a scrumptious meal with a table right by the window & a perfect view over Positano as the sun set & the lights of the town turned on one by one. Just magic :)
In the evening we sat in the hostel bar & ate Nutella crepes that Christina made for us (oh…my…God…YUM!) and chatted to other travelers. There were people from Utah, Quebec, London…& everyone was just so friendly, & the atmosphere was really chilled out, relaxed, homely. We had a really wonderful evening & we were both already wishing that we could stay here for a month…we already decided to cancel our night's accommodation in Naples on Friday and take a bus from Sorrento early on Saturday morning straight to Naples airport so that we could spend our last night in Sorrento instead. This place is just too amazing to waste a single second of time anywhere else!
