I woke up early this morning, determined to get out & see Nice after having spent most of the previous day perusing the local hospital! I went down for breakfast (which is included at our hotel - oh my goodness, could it get any more amazing??), and oh my goodness…more raptures! More delight! A full hot buffet breakfast, complete with eggs, bacon, fresh fruits, mini pain au chocolat - the works!! :D I couldn't wipe the smile off my face! What a delightful way to start the day!
Kel slept in a bit & I went for a walk down to old Nice to visit the fruit & flower markets. It was a really beautiful morning - warm enough to wear a dress, bright & sunny - perfect for wandering around the markets. There were flowers galore, & they were SO cheap! Beautiful roses at only 5 euro a bunch! :O I wandered back via Multari patisserie for a petit pain au chocolat (when in Nice… :P) & met Kelly at the hotel to go to the hospital. She has to go back every day while she's in Nice to have her wounds redressed, & will have to continue seeing a doctor when she gets home as well. When they looked at the burn today they said it was worse than they had realized. They are hoping to prevent it from scarring but said they cannot be sure that it won't :( It will take a long time to heal & she will not be able to expose her back to sunlight for at a year.
Kelly was obviously feeling quite upset about the whole thing, but she cheered up when her boyfriend Eddie arrived. He is in town just for one night to spend some time with her as she is currently living in Galway, Ireland, & he is based on London. They headed off into old Nice to have lunch & I went to Planet Sushi, which was AMAZING! A conveyer belt of yummness delivered little plates of sushi & other assorted goodies round past me as I struggled over what to choose. I had sweet sushi for the first time, which was delicious - it had Nutella in the middle! Om nom nom :)
After lunch I went for a long walk along the beach front down Rue Etas Uni (United States Street) up around the coast to the port. The water is the most amazing Aztec blue colour, and SO clear…guess that's why they call it cote d'azure! It was a beautiful sunny day & the beach was crowded with happy Easter break beach goers lying on deck chairs & under blue & white striped umbrellas on the pebbled beaches. It's also the school spring break here in France so there are LOTS of people here on vacation right now. Not as busy as it would be in the middle of summer though!
So I wandered past the ridiculously huge boast & yachts in the port, through the antiques quarter & back down through old Nice. I tried some Socca, which is a cuisine you can't find in many places…it's almost like a thin chickpea pancake that you eat seasoned with lots of pepper. Then I wandered back to the hotel to have a shower before heading out with Kel & Eddie at happy hour! We stopped for a drink in our hotel bar (aaaah…yes, our very own hotel bar!) then found a nice little place to eat in old Nice. Things are finally starting to feel like they're getting back to normal again, & Kelly has been such a trooper throughout the last 2 days…hopefully there will be many more good things to come now! :)
