Saturday 9th January.
Another early start. We were up and eating breakfast at 8. We planned to meet Lauren, who was in Thailand with us, and had to be there for 10. Our hostel is next door to the train station though so we didn't have to go far. We all went to a cafe at the station and had a drink and a catch up, it was great to all get together again and hear about what she had been up to after we had to go home from Thailand. We said our goodbyes again as Lauren is off to live just outside of Sydney, and we went to get ready for the day. We decided to head to the Royal Botanic Gardens, which are right behind the opera house. They were absolutely beautiful. Next to every plant, tree, flower or feature there was a plaque to tell you what it was, or some information so you knew what you were looking at. I noticed a sign saying they had a little 'choo choo train' that takes you round the gardens, so we went to find that. We paid $5 and the driver also commentated as we went around. I was surprised at how interesting a garden's could be. When we got off we went to the cafe and got a drink and sat and watched a wedding that was happening in the gardens. Kirsty tried to discreetly take a photo but one the bridesmaids awkwardly spotted her. After an afternoon there we went back to the hostel and fell asleep. We didn't wake up until 7 and had to be ready to go out at half past eight. We quickly got showered and ready and met everyone in the reception at the hostel. Gary, 'the group leader', took us all down to Darling Harbour where they set off fireworks on the water. We spoke to a couple of girls with us called Sarah and Stacey who were from Liverpool. They were telling us they had been doing a beach walk in the day and got flashed by some random man. They even had a video, but seemed to see the funny side of it. We got to the harbour and we went and grabbed a McDonald's as we hadn't eaten since lunch and it was now 9pm. We stood in the harbour and watched the fireworks which were really good, and just kept thinking that I don't think I can ever get bored of Sydney. I love it here. We met up with Saffi and Will afterwards, who Kirsty had met when travelling in Laos, and went for a drink in a bar. Afterwards, we left them to go and meet the rest of the group again at home bar where we had a free entry pass from the hostel. The queue was already big and it was only 10pm. We got questioned in the queue by the bouncers about how much we had had to drink. He didn't believe we had only had one drink, which meant we obviously looked tired because we definitely weren't even tipsy. He seemed to be fine once we told him he had travelled from England a few days ago and had a couple of late nights. When we got in there we agreed we were too sober to stay. It had a few different floors and bars and was a bit like a gatecrasher at home, and everyone was wasted. We didn't stay long and left to go back to Scubar which was back next to our hostel. We went in for one, with a free drinks voucher we got off Gary, but it was so busy we couldn't move and we had both literally had enough for the day so we left after midnight and went to bed.
