Hey everyone,
I`m actually cheating as i`m writing this from the airport in Buenos Airport not Uruguay but I did go - honest. Anyway, when I lost wrote, we had just arrived in Buenos Aires. Well we had a fantastic time. We stayed 4 nights initially. The city is great and we did lots of tourist things. We went to the Casa Rosada where Evita did all her speeches from and also went to see her grave. We went to see their version of Big Ben which to be honest, isn`t a patch on ours!!
I can`t describe how cheap Buenos Aires is. It is crazy cheap. We`ve been having a 2 course meal and wine every night and it generally costs about 5 pounds each. A fair bit of shopping has been done too but I think i`ve been pretty restrained to be honest. It helps to remember that everything I buy has to be carried on my back for the next 2 months so that helps me to resist.
We`ve got really into the Argentinian way of life. The first night, we went for dinner at about 8pm and the restaurant was empty. It only got full after 10pm so after that, we never went for food before about 10:30pm! We also went to La Boca which is a neighbourhood in BA. It`s also where the Boca Juniors football team is based. We`d been warned that if you stray from the tourist area, it can be dangerous so we were a bit nervous and decided we`d just take a few pics and head out but we ended up being there about 4 hours. It was such a colourful neighbourhood and had a great atmosphere- Don`t worry though, we didn`t stray far! Boca Juniors played their last match here last night and they needed a draw to win the title. We watched a bit of it but not sure of the final outcome. If they won - there would have been one huge street party in La Boca as they take football very seriously.
After 4 nights in Buenos Aires, we got the boat across to Uruguay. It`s only 1 hour away by boat. We didn`t get chance to see Montevideo the capital (Shell, i`ll prob take you there when you come out!) but we headed straight to a beach resort called Punta del Este. It`s where the fashionable young Argentinians go for their holiday so of course we fit right in!! :-) Our hostel there was really nice. We had a room with a seaview and a little balcony etc. We went out for dinner and the guy at the hostel directed us where to go. We found it and looked at the menu and by South American standards, it was really expensive. We were quite surprised he recommended it but the food was AMAZING and still only cost about 20 pounds each for a 2 course meal and wine and lots of free stuff in between courses. The restaurant was so nice too. Anyway, when we got back we told him and he couldn`t stop laughing. He said apparently it`s for Argentinian Celebrities as they`re the only people that could afford to go there. He meant a steak house further down the road. Oops. I think he felt sorry for us though because he gave us free beer.
We had a full beach day in Punta del Este which was really nice although it`s the Atlantic ocean so the sea was FREEZING! Was nice to chill out for a change though!! After 2 nights we headed back to Argentina via Colonia which is an amazing town. Gorgeous cobbled streets, lovely restaurants etc. You could spend a week just there but unfortunately we only had a few hours. Claire had burnt really badly on th ebeach so we spent the day chasing the shade. (Very unlike me!)
Back in Argentina, we did more shopping, had pedicures for 2.50 and continued to eat like Royalty. We are now at the airport waiting for our flight to Iguassu. Can`t wait to see the falls as they are supposed to be spectacular. Also meeting Suzy Poo there so will be great to see her.
We thought it would be a good idea to fly this morning after 3 1/2 hours sleep, not the brightest idea we`ve ever had I don`t think. Anyway, we`re sad to be leaving Buenos Aires as we love it but looking forward to getting to Brazil too.
Will update soon on Iguassu.
