We arrived in Santiago early Saturday morning for a very brief 16 hour visit as we wanted to get our RTW back on its original schedule. We checked into the Santiago Marriott which had arranged a terrific suite for us as well as a guide to take us around the city. Hugo, our guide, drove us through Santiago's diverse neighborhoods starting with the new part of the city which is its financial center and features a building that resembles a 40 story Erickson cell phone that is the headquarters of the largest telecom in Chile. We then climbed one of the city's two major hills (Santa Lucia Hill) which affords 360 views of Santiago from the Andes in the east to the coastal range that separates Santiago from the Pacific Ocean (see cover photo). Our tour continued at the city's main plaza that featured the original Church that was built by the Spanish in the early 1500s and has been the main Cathedral in Santiago ever since. Our last stop was the fish market where we were able to see almost every imaginable type of fish and was a precursor to the live markets we would see in other parts of Asia. Certainly different then the seafood counter at Wegman's! Following our tour, we were picked up by my Wharton classmate, Jaime de la Barra, who once again offered to host me at his home for a wonderful lunch and chance to spend time with his family. We had a chance for a quick dip at the Marriott pool and it was time to head off for our overnight flight to Auckland.
