We arrived early Thursday morning and after checking into the Plaza Marriott we arranged a half day tour of BA's most famous sites. In just a few short hours we were able to learn quite a bit about Argentina's rich history starting with the Spanish arrival in the 1500s. The on again/off again fighting between the native population and later native and immigrants against Spain climaxed in 1810 but not because of a dramatic victory in South America, but because Napoleon had a weakened Spain in Europe. In fact, we learned that most South American countries trace their independence to 1810 and their early Constitutions mirrored the US. On the tour we also saw Casa de Rosa (the President's office, the La Recoleta cemetery where Evita Peron is buried, the home of Boca Juniors football (Maradona and Messi) and Malvinas Memorial (Falklands). We had been anticipating Argentinian beef for several weeks and we were not disappointed dining at two of BA's top steakhouses where we also discovered two new culinary treats - provoletta - a very dry provolone that is an inch thick pizza slice wedge that is grilled and served as an appetizer and - dolce la leche crepes - a rich carmel wrapped in a thin crepe - for dessert. The only difficult part was dinner started at 930 pm and we needed to walk off dinner until midnight. On our last day we had the chance to explore BA's various neighborhoods with a tour of the Teatro Colon (Opera House dating back to 1908) including lunch in a kosher restaurant in Latin America's largest Jewish community. We will have to save the tango dancing for our return visit.
