Friday the 13th, it was time for Mojo Surf Weekend Escape!!! What we thought would be a 3day surfing experience turned out to be just 1 day of surfing. We arrived at the surf camp in Crescent Head around 1am on the Saturday and left the camp around 12pm on the Sunday... After a few hours of sleep, we got up at 7am on Saturday morning, anxious to get started, had brekky, and got instructions. The guys who worked at the camp can only be described as CRAZY, enough said. About 9o'clock we hit the water, all 55 (!!!) of us. Needless to say, chaos roarded! 55 beginners, all on longboards, trying to catch the same wave. Once we've got a hang of it, which means we litterally HUNG on/behind it(the surfboards was attached to our foot and was draging us after it....) LUNCHTIME...!! Very good lunch though, all made by surferdudes. We've got to give them that...the guys could cook and clean! definately attractive! ;) After lunch nap-time, or as we called it, SIESTA! After an hour of siesta it was out on the surfboard yet again. Once we got up on the board, we either got slammed in the head by another board, or we slammed our own board into someone elses head. FUN!!!! ;D oh.. by the way, 47 of the 55 was american students.... We....ehm..pretty much hung out with the few europeans who was there. At nighttime it was, of course, beer o'clock. Bon fire and nudity came hand in hand. all made by the surferdudes of course:-) All in all the weekend was fun, but we didn't quite feel we got our moneys worth though... The day after we got dropped of at Kempsey's, in the middle of nowhere, waiting for our next bus to Byron Bay. 5 hours later we arrived at Aquarious, our hostel in Byron where we met the Norwegian girls again Anja, Vilde and Malin.
Byron Bay is calm and loud at the same time. So that was our keywords for our stay there. Cheeky Monkeys was the place to be for everyone exept Turid who had gotten a bad cold and had to take it easy the next few days. We met some girls who lived in their car and invited them for pre drinks the last night in a park nearby. All of a sudden it started to rain heavily (like every day since Ko Tao, Thailand....thanks for that btw....) and we had to go under the roof of a hotell entrance...apperantly the guests of the hotel didn't like us sitting there, so they called the police.. Lucky for us the police were on our side, and if it wasn't for the fact that they were working, they would've joined us ;)
The day after the five of us went on to Brisbane, on our way to Hervey Bay and Fraser Island. What we saw of Brisbane that one night was basically the inside of a cinema theatre. After seeing "confessions of a shopaholic" we jumped right over to the next room and saw "He is just not that into you", a revalation to us all!!! :O
The next day we took the bus at 7.45 am and landed in Hervey Bay 5hours later were we attended a meeting of safety and stuff for our trip to Fraser Island, the worlds biggest sand island. This was because we were on a self drive tour in a 4WD vehicle. We learned about being dingo safe, how to drive the car...and how NOT to drive the car and about camping stuff. We were a group of ten people, 5 norwegians, 2 danish, 1 swedish and 2 english. We bough our own food for the weekend(3days, 2 nights) and the next morning, off we went!! All a bit anxious after being told horror stories about car craches and getting stuck in the sand (having to spend the next 3 hours digging the car out of the sand). But we managed because we had excellent drivers, Turid being the BEST!! :D
First stop was Lake McKenzie, fresh water, so clear that we could drink it...and we did ;) Next stop was the shipwreck from 1906, washed ashore at Fraser sometimes during the 20th Century. The roads on Fraser btw was uphill, downhill, bumpy, sandy, and unsteady. Once we got to the beach we were on a timelimit because of the tide rising. In the middle of the beach there was washouts(rivers seeking the ocean) everywhere, and we needed to constantly be on a watch out for these. specially one, Eli Creek, which we were told was enormous, that it would have water on a hight of 60-90cm... NOT at ALL exagurating(?) there Cliff!!! After the shipwreck and Eli Creek we headed towards the campsite. We slept, offcourse, in tents! And we made excellent steakdinner, in almost pitch black, hurray for us! Food really does taste better in the dark, sharpens your senses... After dinner, when camping, what do you do?? Drink beer offcourse, or Goon! If you do drink goon, you're required to slap it!
Next day, early start at 7.30 am(!!!) ate breakkie, and then off to a sort of mountain-thingie, where we were on a look-out for sharks, turtles, dolphins and whatnot (didn't see any:-( .... ) By the way, we couldn't at all swim in the ocean because of all the sharks and stingers.
When we left the muntain-thingie, to get around it you had to put the car into L4(low gear) and stamp on the gaspedal with all your force, in order to get to the other side of a really rough area of sand! If we were to fail, we would be facing 3 hours of digging to get the car out... luckfully we had good drivers, and that didn't happen!! :-)
Next stop was "champagne pool", easiest described as a pool where waves came crushing into it(it being the pool) and the bubbles made it feel like champagne...
After that, back to Eli Creek to swim in it. Good thing we didn't know at the time that a brown snake (THE most deadliest snake) had been spotted in the waters only minutes before we arrived. You do NOT want to be bitten by a brownsnake!!! Or any other snake for that matter :S
We arrived at our second campsite, where we had luxury matresses... or at least they were matresses, so that made them luxurious in it self... (directly norwegian-english translated?? donno) anyways, we had dinner in a bad lit kitchen, but still, a kitchen, and again... drinking is camping, or the other way around, if you must... so thats what we did.. again. The sky was so clear that we could see possibly every star that excists... or it looked that way anyways... we could even see the milky way... amazing!!! Wish we could've captured it on camera. At the toilet we spotted, as usual, some very delisious spiders... love those! And we saw dingo's.... after spotting one, they just seemed to be everywhere after that.. funny how that works.
Next day, 1 hour behind schedule(oh noooo!!) we got in the car and drove to lake wabby - we walked about 40 minutes, 20 minutes of them through desert sand, felt like we were in the sahara... except for all the trees we still could spot in the distance... and the mountains and all.... and the big lake offcourse... but other than that, it truly felt like the sahara, honestly! Lake Wabby looked as average as any norwegian lake, But, we'll give them that, never have we seen such a steep beach... After staring at the lake for about 5 minutes, we made our way back to the car, and headed towards the ferry... on the way we stopped at lake McKenzie again (the lake from the first day)... it was still amazing! On the ferry back to the mainland we all slept, exhausted by to much fresh air! Back at the hostel, we took long waited showers and just layed at the sofa watching movies... norwegian sunday:)
Our next destination is Whitsunday islands, wich will be a blast... ! So long guys! Kisses
