BULA EVERYONE!!
Allright, suddenly our Fiji holiday came to an end. 12days in paradise islands were our biggest worry was the numbers of hours we had to wait between each meal and if there was going to rain. We have been catching up on some tan while exploring different resorts, beaches and islands.
We landed at the airport in Nadi, and had a night on the mainland before starting our 10days of island jumping with our Bula-pass (unlimited ride on the boat going up and down the yasawa island groups and south sea islands) pluss accommodation pass(free accommodation and food on spesial selected islands and resorts).
Our first night was on Kuata island and resort. The second we spent on Oarsman Bay resort before we had three days on Coral View resort. After that we had a night at Sunrise beach resort, before we went back down to Kuata for a couple of nights. The last two nights we spent at Beachcomber island.
Kuata was our first real island impression of Fiji. We were welcomed with a group of fijian people standing on the beach, singing and playing guitar while we were on our way in there. We were also welcomed with a BIG BUUULA, which basically means Hello:-)
We were sleeping in bunkbeds, in a big "outhouse" with no real doors or windows.
After an okey lunch and a questionable dinner in the evening, we got to experience Buladancing for the first time, as we were kind og forced up on stage for the Kuata entertainment. Afterwards it was the "musical-chair" which non of us won because of all the OVERLYEAGER and cheating other people :-O heheh... It was all in all a quite okey first night.
The second night we travelled all the way in the north to Oarsman's Bay, which was recommended by different people at home. First of all we got to know that we had to pay 37fiji dollars ekstra per night(multiply by 4 to get it in norwegian kroners), in addition to our accommodation pass, which was fine, we knew this from before. What we DIDN'T know...was that we had to pay even more for the small boat taking us from the big yellow boat to the island(this was free on all the other islands). This costed us 21dollars extra EACH (10,50 each way). This we ofcourse didn't get to know before we had taken the boat and was actually ON the island....so thank you very much for that. In total for one night we therefore paid 53dollars(acc.pass) pluss 37dollar pluss 21dollars...111 fiji dollars per person for ONE night on a dorm...OUCH.... On this island there was nothing happening in the evening and we were pretty much left on our own to entertain ourself. With us - we were 12people here. We had a 12bed dorm all to ourselves even. But it was not ALL negative. We got to see a beautiful sunset, good food and the beach was also very idyllic and beautiful. Daredevils as we are, we even took our bikinitops off in an attempt to tan our until then VERY white boobs ;-P It's easy to get "crazy" like that when there are NO people in sight:-). We may got a little too relaxed to actually noticed the boat floating right by us, filled with people coming from a sunday preach in the local church....woooops! ;-O
Ah, well... after this very expensive day and night at Oarsman's, we made our way over to Coral View, which was not far from Oarsman's. At coral view they greeted us with welcomingdrinks and the staff from all around the island(allmost) came to shake our hand and personally welcome us to the island. We were served lunch (hot dogs) but we had already eaten at oarsmans before we came there, so we just went straight to our rooms (the hot dogs made us, btw, become vegetarians for the rest of the Fiji stay...) we got our beds at a BIIIG dorm, 24 beds or something like that, but we were satisfied with this. Coral view was a really pretty island with a big grasslawn where we could sunbathe, wich we did for about 70% of our waken hours. The rest of our time we spent thinking about the next served meal.. (we were hungry a lot)! at night time, after dinner, the staff had entertainment for us, they sang and we all learned the Bula dance(a different one then on Kuata)... we also played bingo(!) and had crabrace, where we all could bid on different crabs, and who ever paid most got the chance to win money on theire crab at the race. (these crabs were actually eremites crabs, not quite what we expected when we first heared about the race, but it was fun though!)
We also tried to make it up to the highest peak of the island to catch the sundown, but because we were unverdressed(wearing only minishorts and singlets) and the grass uphill was overdressed (2m high) we didn't get very far before we had to turn around... such a shame!
Near Coral view there's an island with a very nice snorkelling spot called blue lagoon. We took a boat out there and went snorkelling for about 2 hours. It was really fun... we found nemo and all his friends... probably some of his enemies as well, bur we scared them off being 3470% theire size. At the way back to coral view, we got in touch with some of the other girls who also went snorkelling with the group, two of them from germany ( Kathrine and Wibke) and two danish girls ( Ina and Cathrine) and an english girl who's name was..... "drumwirle" ...... Cathrine... ! Shocker! As it turned out, they were all very nice (like every person we've met) and we wounded up spending most of our fiji-stay with them (except Catrhine who had to leave earlier:( ... )
the last day at Coral view the weather wasn't good, it was raining a lot, so we sat inside playing card, waiting for lunch and for embarking the boat. The other girls went on south, while the two of us headed over to an other island close by, called Sunrise resort. It was a small resort and the staff was super friendly... the woman who worked there even offered to be our spare-mum, wich was nice... but she could OFFCOURSE not compare to our mothers back home:-)
We spent one night at sunrise, and it rained almost the whole time.. at night we couldnt really sleep because off the rain tapping on the roof...
Next day we decided enough was enough and we went down south again to meet up with the other girls at Kuata (where we spend one night before)... We had a lot of fun... sunbathing at day, entertainment by half naked Bula men dancing traditional Cannibal(!!!!)dances etc. We also got to try Cava, Fiji's answer to alcohol (AND ITS PERFECTLY LEGAL)... it makes ur tounge go a little numb, and it's said to make you sleep like a baby... didn't really feel the last effect though.. but it was nice to have tried some tipical Fiji custom. The next day (easter longfriday ) some of us took the boat to the neighbour island to experience a Fijian churchceremony... it was nice, interesting, but also quite booring, like church is supposed to be!
The next day, we had a 30 minutes boatride into the middle of the ocean(a lot of waves, not really comfortable), we came to a reef... here we got to snorkel with white-tipped reefsharks! It was really a lot of fun, a bit scary at first, but all in all a lot of fun... the locals tapped the reefs with rocks to attract the sharks, and then fed them with fishes... we came pretty close to them, almost got to touch them!
After more sunbathing, we all had to say goodbye to eachother:( But well knowing that we would meet again either at the airport or in LA). We headed to our next island, beachcomber, also known as the "party island", and indeed it was!! enough said... kiddiiiiiiiin!! Beachcomer was one of those island where we had to spend extra money to stay at, but it was worth it. the food there was amazing and there was a lot of people in a good mood... all natural mood offcourse... (!). We had two nights there, and at daytime we laid in the sun, as usual.. We got to know two locals, Dwayne and Samuel(yeah, we know.. very local names)! Samuel was actually a chief, like a headmember of his village... he didn't appear to be though, he hardly spoke a word, not cause he didn't want to, just because he was sooo shy! poor one!
Back at the mainland, for one last night before taking the plane to LA, we met up with the locals, and they showed us around Nadi (the town we stayed at), and also some other smaller villages...We even got to meet Dwaynes parents (his dad was australian and his mum was from Fiji) They had been sitting at a resort waiting for us for quite some time, so they had been drinking a COUPLE of beers!! They were preeeeetty drunk, to say the least. it was fun, they sat a whole group of locals, and we fitted(NOTso much) right in.. one of the guys we met there was a really high-up-there person (he use to be a navy-corporal for the US marine or something) and he wasnt' about to let us forget it! Anyways, we ate some dinner and had a couples.. After that the guys drove us back to our hostal and we had a gooooooood nights sleep (in our own private room!! WOOOooow!! luxury). the next day was spent by doing our laundry.. (wich takes most of a day when certain people(hrmf) cut in line.... At 7pm we took a taxi to the airport and spent most of our time there standing in line... Seemed like all of fiji was flying to LA that day! We met up with the german girls, but didnt get much time with them before we had to board the plane for a 10,5 hour flight! yaaawn! And offcourse, with our luck, we got to sit next to two, at first nice, american boys... wich turned out to be quite annoying after about... mm.. lets say.. 5(!) minutes! The only thing to do was fetching our iPod's and pretending to be really busy for the rest of the flight... ! Next day.. nooo, whoops... still same day (we went back in time and got to experience 14th of April twice!) we were in LA! Here the security was really.... hmm.. what's the word we're looking for??? SEcure?!.. we even had to give them our fingerprints (so our plan to do something criminal went straight down the drain, darn!!) But still, we were in LA, how FUN!!!
