Lin & Phil - Out and About in the Big World...
Hello,
We flew back to Delhi safely and stayed at 'cottage yes please'! It was awesome, for 600rps = 8GBP we got an ace room and its brand new so weve boked ourselves back in there when we return from Darjeeling (when Tom arrives).
After a scary moment at check in where the airline assistant said theyre was a problem with our tickets and gave them back to us with 29/2 scribbled across them we had a mini panic thinking that we may have forgotten that 2006 was a leap year! but after a quick division of 2006 by 4 we realised it couldnt be and even checked in my the diary! 5 minutes later we were given our boarding card - safe!
Caught our plane to Bagdogra (Andy the flights here are awesome as they usually stop somewhere else on route so you get 2 takeoff and landings for the price of 1 - This time we stopped at Guwahati - a place where theres a lot of tension and sometimes fighting - the plane was an 8 day old! airbus A320).
We arrived at Bagdogra airport and got out of the plane to hear some air force planes taking off and flying over head (we are quite near the border area here!).
We took a txai from the airport to Darjeeling - what a ride! possibly the scariest but most thrilling and scenic taxi ride weve ever had. The road - hill cart road - which has a world heritage miniature toy train railway runing beside it and across it at times - gradually began to rise and gripped the side of the mountain, the road got narrower, the mountains steeper amd the barriers to prevent our vehicle straying over the edge more and more feeble and sometimes non existent. As we got higher and higher to about 7000 feet the sun began to set, passing through villages which happens now and then when you turn round a few sharp corners reminded me a little of being on the 'pirates of the caribbean' ride at disneyland only without the water! The village buildings and sheds grip tight to the roads, fires light the edge of the road and people mumble whilst sitting on chairs near to the roads side.
our driver seemed to be in as much of a hurry as the rest of the lunatics in this stretch of India, Linds squeals and gasps seemed to make no difference to the speed he drove and i didnt fancy our chances of falling a few thousand feet down an 80 degree slope in a 20 year old clapped out van - it was the sort that most green grocers seem to own in England, those really thin things, but this one had no seat belts! Anyway we got their after a 2 1/2 hour 89km trip.
Our hotel - the shangri-la-regency is a beauty and a bargain too. The rooms big, clean, well decorated, brand new and about a 1/3 of the price id expect to have to pay for it.
The best meal since we arrived in India was enjoyed in the restaurant - sweet and sour pork and a hot chocolate - its cold up here! Then we headed to bed with the heater on full blast.
