Hello from the smallest room in history! We had heard that Hong Kong was short of space but our room is incredible! I don't think we have ever seen such efficient use of space! But we have everything we need including free wifi so happy days!
Hong Kong is a really impressive city. We've been here for two days and have tried to take in as many experiences as possible. When we were in Bolivia we met a lovely group of girls from Hong Kong and one of them, Foon, kindly sent us an itinerary of everything we should see and eat while in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, Foon was away for the Easter holidays so we didn't meet her but her advice was very much appreciated.
The city is made up of lots of islands so on our first day we took a trip on the local Star Ferry and had breakfast on Hong Kong island. We decided to go traditional with everything we ate so for breakfast we had an egg tart and drank some Yin Yeung, a mixture of tea and coffee which is surprisingly nice!! We spent the whole day sightseeing, zipping around the city on the brilliant subway, and even took a 25 minute cable car ride to see the largest outdoor Buddha statue in the world! A real highlight for us was taking a tram ride up to the top of Hong Kong and seeing the sky line lit up at night. Our quest to stick to local cuisine definitely came with some challenges.....chopsticks!! Although we had a few cramped hand muscles and a few embarrassing moments of spilling food, we eventually got the hang of it.
We didn't do too much shopping as most of the shops were slightly outside the backpacker budget, every second shop was Gucci, Cartier, Rolex watches etc. Some people in Hong Kong must have a lot of money! Hong Kong, like Hollywood has an avenue of stars, where Chinese film stars have been commemorated with stars on the footpath alongside imprints of their hands. We were a bit clueless of course and the only ones we recognised were Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan! We finished our touring at a gold plated statue of a blooming flower. This commemorates the day Hong Kong was released from British rule in 1997. It is now under Chinese rule but is very independent, a bit like the way Scotland is in the UK.
We fly to Kathmandu in Nepal tonight and we are looking forward to doing some trekking and experiencing another exciting new culture!! Hope you are all well and enjoying the longer evenings and a bit of sun too!!
Lots of love, Linda and Ger
Ps. Photos will be uploaded soon. Need a decent connection to get it sorted!
