HELLO MEXICO CITY!! Flight landed at about 530am local time and we tookk the metro to our hostel which was in the trendy up-and-coming district of La Condesa, recommended to us by the San Diego dudes. The metro system i was so impressed with, a journey costs 3 pesos which is about 16pence and the intervals between each metro train are about 12 seconds, insane. The actual journey apparently costs 9 pesos but two thirds of it is subsidised by the Mexican government. Maybe we should take a leaf out of Mexico{s book.
Eventually arrived at our hostel and rang the bell, unintelligible spanish spoken by crazy little mexican man and then 10 minutes later he let us in, so cute. Our room was absolutely huge and we had a balcony, tv, kitchen and bathroom. Decided to sleep til lunch as we basically hadnt slept for 24 hours then took the metro to the Zocalo which is what they call the main square in Mexico City, investigated the Centro Historico, Palacio Nacional, Templo Mayor, and various museums and art galleries. Mexico City is crazy. Essentially a city of polar opposites, they have tiny little food stalls that just sprawl out into the streets and parks yet there are some beautiful cosmopolitan bars and restaurants, its cool. There is a massive male-dominated presence especially on the metro, and they generally just stare at me fascinatedly, but after a day you get used to it. Had our first mexican lunch at a little cafe/grill thing, we had absolutely beautiful chicken tacos which they covered in soured cream, guacemole, cheese and avocado, they were so delicious. Had beer and horchata, and the bill came to a MASSIVE 4pounds in total.
Then we took a stroll around the park at the Palacio de las Bellas Artes lined with stall upon stall of tacos, tortas, churros, corn, which all cost about 4p each it is ridiculous. Then it rained so we went for cocktails in this really cool bar which had a fountain inside. Metro back to hostel, got ready, went to a bar in our district. Ordered from hmemade cardboard menus and got the weirdest array of stuff on our table. A huge block of cheese in a bowl with a knife, weird paprika-covered conker nuts, an orange that was ironically green, a salt shaker with orange salt and 2 shots of MEZCAL, the Mexican spirit of choice and one of the most potent liquids i have ever tasted. I suspect it was just pure ethanol but it was my last hour of being 21 so i had to shot mine and Darrens who couldnt stomach it. Instantly drunk, tried and failed to find another bar so went back to the hostel where the crazyt but lovely man had locked us out, and sent his little slave girl to open the door for us and it creaked open as she hid behind it, weird.
Tomorrow we are headed for Oaxaca :)
PEACE OUT
