Aidan promised us beatuiful hot springs with no crowds and a snowy mountain backdrop. Sounded great, then he told us it was a long way from the car park. 17km to be exact.
So on a beautiful Saturday morning we got up early, packed our bags and started the trek. Aidan had also promised us a lovely stroll though the woods. It started like this but then we had to cross creeks and scramble rocks. Most creeks had bridges, however the longest bridge was being repaired and was very unstable.
Nicky and Clouter stormed ahead whilst Aidan and I followed. Sheer determination and a bag of fizzy jelly worms was how we did it.
We got to our little hut and went straight into hot springs to soothe our aching muscles. The feeling was amazing but was ruined by the crowds of sandflies.
That night we went to bed at 8pm. There was nothing to do. Clouter got a fire started then Aidan and Nicky put it out again. This was our evening's entertainment.
The walk back the next day was a struggle. Aidan had 7 blisters and I had aching legs. Halfway along we were cheered up by seeing a wild mountain goat hopping along the rocks. Once again the boys ran most of the way.
That evening we treated ourselves to stay at the Rainforet Retreat. A proper campsite with showers! And even a hair dryer. (I haven't used a hair dryer for 4 months!) Plus a restaurant on site, we had lots of pizza and beer.
Katie.
