We arrived in Hervey Bay on the Friday and had a pretty lazy day. It was sunny so we went to the beach which was really nice for us as it was the first beach we'd been to with no waves. Fraser Island blocks the swell so its nice and calm. That evening we had our Fraser Island briefing where we told about the weekend ahead of us and we were put in our car groups. Unfortunately we ended up with a pretty useless group. Two members of our group could hardly speak English and the other two were the most annoying Dutsch couple we've ever met (eg. the guy ate all the food and tried to burn Alices towel!) so we ended up organising everything for everyone.
The next day we had to be up at 6.30am to load the 4x4's and we had to watch videos about Dingo safety etc etc. We got the ferry over to Fraser Island which took about 40minutes then we went straight to Lake Mckenzie which was amazing. The water is totally clear and we decided to swim to the other side where we ended up on an empty beach. After lunch we drove along the beach and looked at the mahino shipwreck and then went to our camp. That evening we cooked dinner for our group then we were taken to the beach to look at the stars and we were given a mini astrology lesson.
We had another early start after a not so good night sleep in tents. We drove to Indian Heads where we climbed up to the top and manged to see a tiger shark and a turtle swimming around in the sea. Afterwards we went to Champagne Pools which are rock pools by the sea which was really nice but since it was the easter weekend it was really busy. Afterwards we drove to another lake which had lots of turtles in, the guide picked one out and it was being passed around the group, unfortunately when it got to Alice it clawed her hands so she dropped it on the hard decking and it probably died of shock. After we all drove to see a sunset but one car broke down twice so we missed it. We went back to camp and had a BBQ, played some drinking games and eventually passed out in our tents.
On our last day we headed to Lake Wabby. Its a half an hour walk until you get to some massive sand dunes and then a walk down to the lake. We stayed there for a few hours before heading back to the Ferry to go back to Hervey Bay. We had the most amazing time on Fraser Island, and luckily for us we didnt have one shower the whole time!
We decided to stay in Hervey Bay for a few more days where we just recovered from the weekend at Fraser. One day we rented out bikes and went on a 4 hour bike round around Hervey Bay.
