Arrived in Waitomo today - there's nothing around and looks dead but they have all these underground caves.....so we went abseiling, black water rafting and caving! It was a lot of fun but soooo cold!
First you abseil 100ft down into the cave and then you zip slide in the pitch black further down into the cave. The whole cave is filled with glow worms (which [boring fact alert!] are actually fly larva burning their crap away - kinda spoils the magic when you know that!). Anyway, once we were down there, they gave us a false sense of security giving us hot drinks and flapjacks sitting on the edge of this ledge around 4 metres above this river. Then they give us a rubber ring and we all have to jump off this ledge into the river - my god the cold - we all went under as we jumped from quite a height and couldn't talk for a few minutes (yup me not being able to talk!). We then cruised down this river enjoying the burning faces all around us for a bit, dumped the rubber rings and went caving! It was great but not for the claustrophobic - we had to crawl under rocks where there was only enough space for our faces above water, squeeze through gaps which I thought were tight so I don't know how your average Jo gets through them!
To get out we had to climb up a couple of waterfalls which looking back was a bit crazy without safety gear but I'm here to tell the tale and was brilliant so never mind! We bought the photos but they're hidden somwehere in the depths of my backpack so will have to upload those another day.
When we left Waitomo the next day we stopped off at a Rabbit sheering shed. Thought it would be interesting until the woman put this cute hairy rabbit onto what I can only describe as a stretching table - she caught a look at my face and me backing away and shouted at me not to leave as the rabbit was clearly in no pain....hmmmmm not sure about when she twisted him upside down and started shaving him - had to make a sharp exit....
