Today was trek day and of course - time for Fiji to have a heatwave! I have never been so hot and uncomfortable in my entire life!
The first part of the trek was up hill with little shade and we had to try and keep up the conversation to distract ourselves as it was unbearable. So I'm talking to the Dunstablians and it turns out we know a lot of the same people (they're long term family friends with Kev the Rev) - really odd!
Kam made us all palm hats which were good at keeping the sun off our faces as well as looking stunning of course!
Finally we reached the river so we were wading calf high through water for about an hour which was a relief until I (of course) slid off a rock and cut open my knee! It was only a cut but the guie was keen to practise hie first aid I think as he bandaged it up about three times and I had to finish the walk with this super tight bandage restricting my walking! Was hilarious though as the track was then so muddy that every few seconds someone was whooping and falling over...
Finally reached the end, had lunch and got into rubber tubes to float down the river and through a couple of rapids - good times!
Tonight was the only night we were eating out of the hostel and going 'out' to a local bar. The guide gave us a talk saying the bar we were going to was the only one safe enough for tourists and we were to stick together and not go anywhere alone - all looking forward to a nice relaxed night then!!
After dinner we walked into this 'Irish pub' and the 2 Irish guys were a tad disappointed. The only thing irish was a Guiness poster on the wall! It was full of locals, we got stared at as we walked through and our guide sat us in a corner. Not exactly my idea of a good night out so headed home pretty soon afterwards!
I have been eaten alive by mozzies (Boots tropical strenth mosquito repelant doesn't work!) and they all turned into water blisters. Not sure why but they are very attractive all down my legs, especially with the big scabs now on my leg too....
Mum now has been given instructions to ring NHS direct as the mothers of the bus (a couple of women from Canada) are ready to ship me off to the doctors for amputation they're so worried....
